If you wanted to start a new internet business, what would it be?

I know this guy who has had over 50 businesses, and now he wants to start something on the internet. He is not internet savvy, he asked me the question, if I had "unlimited funds" (don't know exactly how unlimited, but the guy has money) and could start any busines I wanted on the internet, what would it be? Any ideas? It has to be something profitable, legitimate, and realistic.

This is what I would do if I had unlimited funds:

-Custom PC construction (with GOOD 24/7 tech support)
-Web hosting/management (also with gOOD tech support)

True, but it's been met with (mostly) success.

fully saturated market with slim profit margins isn't the business i'd dump money into.

Yep, things like that are mostly a commodity businesses these days...

OP, this is an excellent ebook written by some very successful people (inventors of Ruby on Rails and quite a few profitable, high profile "web 2.0" businesses). It'll give you a very good idea of non-commodity internet business.

Enjoy

Well, here's what I came up with.

Gambling: Find a way for Americans to gamble online somehow. How? No idea, but if it could be done, it would be incredibly profitable.

Porn: Biggest money maker online, but the competition must be massive.

Gaming: Not sure how much money is there, but I'm guessing it would take a long time to create a game and get a lot of people to join.

Sales: Need a unique item, or an incredible price point on something everyone else is selling. Possibly importing items and selling to resellers here in the states, but what item(s)?

Advertising: Good money, but lots of competition.

Web design: Lots of competition.

Something for the older generation: Old folks are quickly becoming the majority, what kind of web based business can take advantage of this?

That's what I've come up with so far, any other ideas?
