I'm telling you, find a decently attractive girl and ask her to teach you. The guy that taught me basically pulled my hips to his and told me not to let any space between. It was the BEST LESSON EVAR. That and we wound up dating afterwards ;)

I hate to be the one to break it to you, but thats not dancing. What you're describing is known as dry humping.

I'd rather Tango, but Tango just ain't as trendy.

Although tap is what I'm doing these days.

Seriously, HOT chicks go for the confident male more than the dancing male.

The two go hand in hand. If you can dance well, chances are you exude confidence as well while you're doing it.

There's nothing wrong with West Coast. It's not swing. It's the slickest dance there is, in my opinion.

exllera I hear you man, i actually just started learning salsa w/my GF. she's nicaraguan and can dance that stuff like its nothing. however it is hard to learn. she's not the greatest teacher and i was looking to go learn somewhere.

also i am in MD right by DC so I go to DC often. I was wondering where you are suggesting are good places to learn salsa? i know Citron has some teachers throughout the week, as does this ballroom in Alexandria, VA.

lemme know where you were suggesting. i mean i know the basics of salsa, and can dance bachata and merenge pretty decently (for a white guy :p) but yea, salsa is where its at. that can really impress the ladies!

If it's not swing, why is it called West Coast Swing?
In any case, is the fundamental figure 6 counts? Is the music usually in 4? If so, it's going to drive me bonkers.

I like the swing steps, I just hate counting sixes and feeling fours.
Maybe I'm just too technical when it comes to music...a lot of people can't feel or count different meters.

hehe, I'm reminded of Ben Stiller's character in Along Came Polly, trying to learn how to dance from a gay Latin guy

If you're technical, stick to standard ballroom; that's probably more your cup of tea :) West Coast isn't really swing per se, and yes it's on a 6 count. Eric Clapton's "change the world" can be done to west coast, for example. It's hard for me to describe the technical aspects of the dance; I kinda just feel it and go, I don't really think about it too much.

I really enjoy dancing and I don't see any problem with it. I'm Indian and most Indian people love to dance as well. However, I really don't look Indian, so people are usually suprised.

Wednesday nights there are salsa lessons at Zanzibar on the SE waterfront, then a salsa dance after the lesson. Over the weekend you can check out Habana Village in Adams Morgan. Monday nights you can go to Lucy Bar on Connecticut.

If you want something other than Salsa, check out Chevy Chase Ballroom in Chevy Chase, DC side, right near the friendship heights metro. I go there quite often for lessons and know the owner. www.chevychaseballroom.com.

Hope that helps :)

LOL, last time I was on the dancefloor I accidentally hit some guy in the head   I was on a litre of vodka though so maybe you wouldn't call it dancing so much as flailing wildly?

While I recognize most women prefer a guy who could dance....

I ALSO recognize that most women like Christina Aguilera or Beyonce or Nelly, or....! Sorry, but I am NOT interested in that kind of woman.

It actually serves as a decent test, though, so more power to the guys who want to pick up dancing chicks and thus leave the more interesting ones to me!* (*Hypothetical, of course, as I'm currently happily married to one that doesn't dance)

Really, I've never been interested in just 'chasing tail', I do WANT a serious relationship, so being able to 'pick chicks up' seems a shortsighted goal. I'd rather meet one in a social setting where getting to know the other person, rather than ability to make yourself look like a baffoon on the dance floor, is the key component of the relationship progressing.

this is prob the 1 absolute truth in the world, men who dance are either 1) drunk or 2) they play for the other team

meh, i'll reserve judgement until i meet you in person ;)

i'm not a good looking guy nor i'm a rich mofo if that's what you want to know, but i'm muscular and athletic.

It is true that most women like to dance. But some actually don't. But most women also included ugly or average looking women. So, really, you have to do something other than just dance well.

The #1 thing I have seen personally is confidence. Whether you are fat or thin, short or tall, hirsuit or bald, you have to have confidence.

#2 Style/fashion. Very important.

I have seen many HHHHOT girls with guys that are bald but have a good body, guys that are ugly but have confidence.

Seriously, HOT chicks go for the confident male more than the dancing male. But, do not confuse confidence with arrogance or being a jock kind of a55hole. They want someone who is confident, yet nice. There is a fine line, but if you master it, and dress well, and have a good body, you can be bald, purple, and have a 4 inch nose and still get play.

Dancing IS a display of self confidence.

So you think all women who dance are sluts, basically?

Edit: As I said, my fiancee I met at a social dance. This basically proves your point invalid :)

The OP makes a great point. If you're afraid of making a fool of yourself, take some lessons and build some confidence. We chicks love the skill/confidence combo.

There are plenty of places to dance anywhere you go, moreso in major cities of course. Don't bother with club dancing, gyrating to house music is not impressive. Learn West Coast Swing, Lindy Hop, Hustle, Salsa, etc... The sexy dances attract a lot of young, attractive women. Ballroom is very good as well (e.g. waltz, foxtrot, rumba, cha cha), however these are competitive dances and require a lot of technique, skill and time to do correctly.

Go to these dances and you'll see some incredibly attractive women dancing with incredibly ugly guys. On the dance floor, attractiveness isn't a big issue; it's how you move. If you're a slick dancer, the women will fall all over themselves to dance with you, period. I actually met my fiancee at a social dance.

Just a little fyi, do with that info as you will :) Also, if you live in the DC metro area and you want to know of some good studios to learn at, PM me and I can offer some info.

I use to pick up alot of chicks with the White Man Shuffle.

You're bound to get chicks if you dance like this...............

I can barely walk without falling down or running into something, but I wouldn't mind learning to ballroom dance.

However, I would never, ever do any of those crazy club "dance" things. ;)

Do you know the difference between dry-humping dancing and social dancing? I've met more slutty girls on college campus and the bars than Swing dance clubs.
