I would have to agree. I don't think incest should be criminal. I do think it is morally wrong and counter to what is best from a biological point of view - I don't agree with it. However I don't think consensual incest should be prosecuted as a criminal act.

The real problem with incest is the risk of fathering children with genetic disorders. I couldn't care less what people do in the privacy of their own home, if one or the other proved they were incapable of having children. It doesn't affect me. It would be pretty difficult to prove infertility, so I could understand why governments keep it illegal.

Of course you'll have folks clamoring on about how immoral and disgusting it is. But it isn't always the governments responsiblity to legislate morality.

Well, the main reason incest is outlawed is because people are afraid of the birth defects and such. I read a while back in some article that the increase in risk is only the same as women over 40.

I'm not saying it's okay though. I still think its morally wrong. But it's everyone's own opinion. Some people think cannibalism is fine...

The legislation against incest isn't just because it is a bad idea genetically, but part of the means we use to structure our society. Incest was generally considered bad mojo long before modern medical science... I'd say keep it illegal for that reason, too. It is just as legitimate.

This is often the problem with Freedom/Liberty and the Law. There need to be limits. The Law doesn't always need to be enforced, but usually should be. Consenting or not, there's really no benefit to removing Laws against it.

well, the law is there to protect people from each other, so you are largely free to do stuff on your own (drugs is a special case, but that is being remedied). Obviously this law is there to prevent risk in the offspring. And really, do you think it is reasonable to have certain laws in place to limit how low man can degrade? I think it could be a good thing for society to at least set some lower limits (like beastiality for instance).

Agreed. Have sex with whoever you want, as long as they're old enough, and consenting. With siblings, there's the risk of genetic abnormalities in any offspring. Solution: Birth control/morning-after pill, and if you want kids, adopt.
Legislators should leave their religion crap and its faux morality out of their professional obligations.

Kind of OT, but check out the age of consent in Spain, or the Vatican for that matter. In general Europe has much more lax laws with respect to sexuality than the US.

FWIW, I don't see much of a problem with legalizing incest among consenting adults. The only thing I'd be worried about is its effects on health care costs (it may result in many more children being born with birth defects that are costly to treat).
