If you use your turn signals, why do you do it?

I get really irritated by people who use their turn signals about 5 feet before they start turning.

Personally, I use mine as a courtesy and to protect myself from geting rear-ended by idiots. I start my blinker about 1/2 block before my turn-sometimes even more distance when there is a lot of traffic.

speaking of the law, do u realzied that cop no longer enforce the law that u have to show signal. At least in California they don't so i don't think the law is really the reason why people show signal.

that and i expect it from other drivers. Signalling your intentions makes you and other drivers safer if they can better anticipate your moves.

I use mine everywhere and for everything. I use them when I change lanes, when I park, when I'm exiting, and I'll even use them when I'm on an empty road, all by myself. It's just habit 😀

BTW - people who don't use their blinkers are #1 on my list to get ran over (if I have the opportunity), and I'll even use my blinkers at the same time if I have to.

They must not have that law in my state. Dunno why they even bother incuding turn signals on cars here, none of the assholes ever use them.

Because it lets other people know what I want to do so they can GTF outta my way 😛

edit: yes, I use my turn signal well ahead of when I am going to turn, unless there is another street that I am passing (this also confuses me when i'm on the side street, because you don't know if they will turn at yuor street, or the next one...).

courtesy, though some arseholes think that means they need to speed up and close the gap so that you can't get in.

Here is a safety tip.

When you overtake an 18 wheeler, make sure he sees you and you see him seeing you in his big mirror, and when you move back in front of him, use plenty of turn signal fluid and do not make the move in front of him until you can see his windshield in your rear view mirror.

Screwing around with 40 tons of rolling death is not ever a wise thing to do, and you will get the respect of these proffesional long haul drivers along with every courtesy they can extend to you by doing so.

I know. I gave that courtesy for the 1 1/2 million miles I drove my big rigs back and forth across this great country. I have seen to many accidents the result of drivers cutting off big rigs. Every time the 4 wheeler got the worst out of the deal. Sometimes critically.

Well I've always been under the belief that it's a good thing to let other people on the road know what you're doing when you want to turn, change lanes, etc. so I use it.

Yes, that's true, but it doesn't benefit you any now does it?

I'll admit that I don't always use my turn signals when I'm in an empty parking lot or when there's absolutly no one else around.

It really bothers me when people try to be slick and maneuver around without using signals. Especially when I cut someone off I will use my turn signals for courtesy and more importantly, safety.

Don't be an idiot, especially a rude one.

Because I want to stay alive, and a car is nothing more than a one ton death machine on wheels. Jerks who see turn signals as opportunities to dart in and cut you off should be painfully maimed as a lesson to them! :disgust:
