I wish I had known about this before I encrypted my User Profiles directory. I lost a lot of work and email messages going back six years (important and memorable ones that I was saving). The Encryption UI is poorly designed because it doesn't warn about the dangers of encryption or the need to backup a key. I thought that as long as I knew my password I'd always be able to access the data.
