If you upgrade your video card a lot your out of luck

Bioshock only allows two activations I am finding out which really sucks because what if your hard drive dies or you want to reinstall your OS ? If it happens more than twice then you can't reactivate Bioshock. Most people don't have this happen or reinstall their OS a lot but thats not the problem. If you upgrade hardware a lot then this could be a problem because a lot of the time you need to install a fresh copy of windows to get it working smoothly.

Its now offically confirmed that steam is effected as well. Though instead of being limited to 2 installs its limited to different pcs so lets say you want to install it on your main pc, secondary pc and laptop. You can't. You can only install it on two of them not all three.

I would be very angry if I bought the steam version and found this out later. Glad I waited for it to go down to $30 at least on steam like Half Life 2!




Someone who works for another game company got it right! I hope 2kgame fixes their major mistake that will hurt them a lot.

Yes but don't you remember the sony copy protection what it did to lots of pcs ? Its more trouble than its worth so I rather not even buy and play the game ever. You can always just play the demo, even if it is short.

True. Yet if you reinstall Windows, or dual boot XP and Vista, change hardware a lot, you're pretty much screwed. I dual boot right now. You may be able to get in touch with them for another key, who knows. I have a hard time thinking that they wouldnt give you another key, or some way to play the game again. Ive had to call MS several times, because I upgrade hardware so much. Annoying, but doesnt take all that long to be honest.

Im not sure if this is the same for the steam version, because we dont put in a key, or go online to activate. I had it preloaded, got home and simply double clicked the icon. And Bioshock fired right up. Im tempted to try it, as I said Ive got XP/Vista on here, and a laptop which would be the third install. Just to see if they would let me do it.

After connecting to the internet and activating it two times on different hardware you then need to activate it manually ever single time. So you have to prove yourself to securom due to the copy protection system used.

I rebooted to XP (wow been a long time) and am downloading Bioshock on steam now. I am also downloading it on my laptop, at the same time. So Im logged into steam twice, and this will be my 3rd install of Bioshock. One on a laptop, one on XP, and one on Vista, on the same machine via dual boot. Ill let you know how it goes.

:thumbsup: the $10 more would be well worth it if it does work! I believe STEAM may not have this problem but not sure. I do know you have to run Steam in online mode to be able to play bioshock though

Pirates aren't affected by this. Theres games that need steam activation yet will still be cracked and played through illegal ways. This is just dumb stuff, because now it's inpossible to resell games. I'm allowed to resell something I've bought, am I not? Now I no longer, which is stupid. It's like allowing people to only park their car in 3 different garages through the lifetime of a car, making it useless for a next owner.

Agreed.

This only somewhat thwarts casual piracy (ie; I let my friend install my game on his PC; or I lend a friend my Steam account).

Real pirates...the pirate industry, and the people with $2000 PCs who never buy software and get it all from torrents...those are completely unaffected by this.. How succesfully has DRM stopped people from getting music off P2P, for example?

It's the legitimate end-user who has to suffer, not the pirates.

I'm allowed a mere two install on Bioshock?

Yup, it only let me play it on two "sytems". mdual boot machine worked fine, not my laptop.
