If you "unsubscribe" to spam, does this have the opposite effect?

I read somewhere that spammers will just note that your email address is actually active, if you try to unsubscribe. They will then spam you more 🙁 Is this true?

It depends on just how shady the spammer is. I would never ubsubscribe because then you are marked as a CONFIRMED e-mail address and your SPAM will multiply.

I've heard that you could bounce back your e-mail using PINE so it appears that your e-mail address is dead, maybe they'll delete you then?

Anyone try that?

hmmm....maybe i'll try this with my old Hotmail account. it'll be like a scientific experiment 😛

hmm i used to get 10 hotmail spam a day, through the time of unsuscirbing now its only 1 a day, lousy UNIVERSITY DIPLOMAS spam, doesnt ahve unsuscribe.

i was unsusciribing generally works

You can bounce e-mails in KMail too. I'm only getting spam from one spammer to my main e-mail account right now, about once a month...I try bouncing it every time but it doesnt do anything since the address the spam was sent from isnt valid.

No kidding. Plus, this is the email I use, whenever I sign up for anything....so I get like 30-40 emails per day in that account.

Is this the KMail you're using?

I never thought that the sending addresses could be spoofed. Even if I could reduce my SPAM by 50% I'd be thrilled.

Usually it just flags you as a good address and you get spammed even worse.

However, there's some cases where a (more or less) legit company buys your email address then spams out to you thinking you actually want to recieve that crap. One such place is Equalamail. I was actually able to unsubscribe from that one.

Still, the vast number of spam emails I get are very easy to flag as spam. Someone needs to make a program like NAV for spam that goes into your mail server every 10 minutes and clears anything that matches a certain criteria out using a dynamic blacklist.

yes, that is a trick, anybody the responds in any way goes way, way , way up the list of "valuable email addresses"

the only way to handle spam is rules/blockers/delete it

Actually, I'm trying that mailwasher right now and it seems to do that... just wonder what it'll do to "fwds:" from people I know...

I was getting mass-mailed viruses from some loser who had an Outlook Worm. After I recieved 100 emails over the course of a week, I contacted his ISP and threatened legal action for malicious content. Haven't recieved another one since.

I wonder if this would work with spam as well?

I just realised myself just how terrible Hotmail is with spam, its aweful! I subscribed to hotmail for an e-mail account, this is no joke, within about 2 hours I had 6 e-mails waiting for me. "Brittany Spears gets cum all over her! Lower your Debt Fast! Lose 10 pounds in 10 days! Want to increase your libido?" Stuff like that, its rediculous. Then there are e-mails that try and be sneaky, I had one who's subject line read "Customer Service", I open it up and its a picture of a chick's snatch. Not the thing I want to open up on my work computer with the possibility of a co-worker or even worse, BOSS, passing by. I'm cancelling the account right after this post, going to Yahoo. Absolutely rediculous, there should be a law against this, and pop-up windows too! Oh my god, pop-up windows, luckily I've found Popup Cop which works excellently, but how long I've had to endure pop-ups before I got this program. I had my computer almost crash once because I had so many windows open, and hitting Alt+F4 as fast as you can is like trying to get out of quicksand, you close one and five more open in its stead. They really, REALLY need to create some sort of federal internet taskforce for unsolicited e-mails and pop-up windows. The pop-up windows can almost be like a virus, like those virus websites that you open up and it opens IE windows till you crash, its practically the same thing!

I use Mailwasher and it does the same thing.

I still get the same old spam over and over again though.

I do that with Kmail as well. I bounce every piece of spam I get. I have also set up filters to get rid of the spam (for example, ALL email from .kr (korea) domain will be sent to thrash).

There really is simp,e solution to spam-problem: All spam should carry "ADV:" in their subject. That way people could treat them accordingly (read: filter them to thrash).

I fokking hate spam! No, I donät hate it, I despise it! I wish spammers die a slow and painful death. You think I'm joking? You think wrong.

Mailwasher is working on v2.0 which works with Hotmail. Also, MSN has teamed with a 3rd-party anti-spam company and will implement something for Fall 2002. Look at it this way, it can't get any worse.

I do the same. My account fills up to the 2mb limit every 2 days. That's how much spam I get and how much hotmail sucks.

Cloudmark Spamnet does just this.
