If you start a thread you are not subscribed, but if you answer in one you are. Why?

It's always seemed strange to me that if you start a thread you have to remember to subscribe to it. What's the reasoning? Uh, I'll just click that little box at the bottom now before posting.

Because not all people want to be emailed every time someone replies to their thread.

I know I don't, I don't want my inbox filled up with notifications from forums.

I believe you have the option of turning that off or at least diverting them to your PM box instead of email.
