I start off with the pillow under my head.

Since I move around so much while I'm sleeping, though, the pillow usually ends up on the floor or at my feet. So... I'm not really even sure if I technically sleep with a pillow or not.

why? I always sleep with my stomach down and I never had a problem. I could never sleep on my back. I've tried but I just cant. Its either on my stomach or on my side.

In general, your spine should always be kept straight. When you sleep on your stomach, you spend the whole night with your head turned to one side. Try doing this right now for 5 minutes. When sleeping on your back with a pillow under your head, your spine spends the night bent. Sleeping on your side without a pillow also leaves your spine bent the whole night.

The best sleeping positions therefore are on your back without a pillow and on your side with a pillow. On your side is best though, because when you sleep on your back without a pillow you run the risk of your head simply falling limp and rolling to the side, in which case you will simply be sleeping in a stomach-sleeper position upside down.

I use one of them fancy space foam pillows. I've really only got about an inch or two of actual distance between my head and the matress once my head sinks into the thing.

It's enough for a slight bit of elevation, but not so much that it's detrimental to your neck/back health.

I always sleep on my sides with a pillow (usually two). I may lay on my stomach and still use pillows, but that's usually for resting, I rarely fall asleep in that position.
