If they make eye contact, say good morning. If they're too busy to notice, just walk past them and say good morning next time you see them.

say hi if they notice you, if not they're ego will be bruised & they will talk shit about you behind your back, sabotage you, do everything in their power to destroy you, etc. nothing much. 🙂
 
Never more than a head nod.

I don't do the whole morning routine thing. The most I will do is quote Pinky and the Brain.

"What are we gonna do today Brain???"
 
I usually nod, or if it's it's something where I can be of assistance (either work related, or related to PC gaming, movies, or food) I sometimes insert myself into the conversation.

We say it all the time here. Maybe it's another one of those outdated southern things who knows.
 
If they make eye contact with me I head nod. If they make a more engaged acknowledgment of my presence I say "hey how's it going?" without stopping to chat.

I vehemently disagree with your statement. All women who work on sugar plantations like to be called sugartits. It is considered the highest form of compliment!
