If you saw a neighbor (home or business) being robbed, what would you do?

Last night, the store across the street (auto zone) got robbed for the 4th time. However, this time, the dumbass pulled up to the front of the store, broke the glass out of the front door with a hammer and went to work. Well, it woke my mom. She looked out the window and figured no one would pull up to the front of a store to rob it at 1:15 in the morning. So she went out on the porch, saw the guy rummaging through the store and saw him leave. She gets his license plate and calls the police. They come in about 3 minutes, 1 unit goes in the direction of the guy and finally picks him up.

Obviously, she did the right thing, but we're not sure if he saw her or not. The light on the porch was off, but still, it was 1:15 in a small town and he probably assumes it was us, since we're the only house in this area. The funny thing is, the store doesn't keep cash there since they've been robbed so many times. He only got a couple of rolls of quarters. I figure he was drugged up, his address is in a gang-ridden town where drugs are pretty bad.

Nevertheless, i only had a single-shot 20ga in the house, but in case he comes back, I did some shopping today. I went to get a shotgun, but found out there is no waiting period in my state for handguns, so I picked up a S&W 9mm. It's fairly nice. Shotgun is better for self-defense but they didn't have any of the guns I had been reviewing and wanted and I've been wanting a handgun since I shot one a couple of months ago soooo..

Would you have called the cops and risked retaliation?

Yeah, Sigma SW9VE. I went back before I bought it and looked at some reviews and it looked solid. I was going for a P228 (which I've read on here is nice) but they didn't have one.

Sounds like she did the right thing and I would have done the same.

Just remember to put a sign in your yard that says, Guns don't kill people, I do. ;)

If she testifies in court, then the guy may come after you, highly unlikely though. But if not he will just assume the alarm system alerted the police.
But now that you have the pistol, you need to make sure everyone in the house is shown how to use it and shown proper firearm safety.
What S&W 9mm did you get, hopefully not the Sigma aka SV series.

The Sigma is a good gun. I have one in .40 cal. with over 3000 rounds through it - zero problems. The Sig P228 is also a very good gun, arguably one of the finer pistols on the market - but you pay a premium for it.

If you don't have neighbors, I suggest you set up a small home surveillance system and watches the area around your home.

Yeah, it's just me and her. We have a farm with a big dirt bank set up with targets so we can shoot into it without worrying about what comes out from behind.

The Sigma series looked pretty good from what I've read.

I used to live in a dodgy part of town, and one night I heard repeated banging. I crept out onto my 3rd floor balcony (mostly obscured by trees), and saw some douche breaking into a Jeep. I happened to have a bag of old, rotten oranges outside. I stood behind the tree and tossed a couple. The third one hit the windshield, and the fourth the roof in rapid succession. The guy jumped so violently he smacked his head hard enough to bleed. He ran away with the deck, and I called the cops, and they picked him up based on the clothing/bleeding head description I had given them. Unfortunately, he'd dumped the deck somewhere, but he still got nailed for it, and had no idea where the oranges had come from :)

Yes, I would call the cops.

I carry, my awesome fantastic g/f carries, and the guy that lives in the basement/apartment in my house carries.

One time my bike alarm went off in the garage - I came bounding down the stairs w/ my XD right as the guy in the apartment came busting out of his room with his .45

Our friends make fun of this home as the "house not to rob".

Despite what you see in movies, most people won't go back for revenge.

For one, it makes no difference. Second, he's all that more likely to be caught again, then fucked for good. Third, he sounds pretty dumb anyways.

Booo, 1911 fan. I've been meaning to add one to my collection, but after picking up the new sig and benelli, I'm tapped out for a good half year.

EDIT: In regards to the OP, I would also probably call the cops as I load up and watch them. As much as I talk, I don't know if I have the balls to go out and hold them there at gunpoint while hte cops come.

EDIT2: Mentioning to the operator that you have a loaded weapon might get the cops there sooner rather then later.

I absolutely disagree. Someone that goes around robbing businesses/people obviously doesn't have a good sense of judgement.

Put this on your front door:

....and other "I carry my gun on my hip, not in my safe" stickers... which according to ebay and google do not exist.
