PMS (premenstrual syndrome) is a complex disorder affecting millions of women. The PMS Research Project® has documented more than 150 symptoms of PMS, ranging in severity from body aches and water retention to migraine headaches and fatigue; from irritability and impatience to suicidal and homicidal thoughts and actions.

It is estimated that 80% of women of reproductive age experience symptoms of PMS. In some cases the symptoms are relatively moderate. However, many women experience symptoms which are overtly severe and debilitating. Still others experience a specific and extremely severe set of symptoms known as PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder). While the numbers are staggering, the medical profession remains at odds when it comes to the cause, diagnosis, and correct treatment. Many doctors still doubt the existence of PMS and PMDD. As a result PMS and PMDD are not always accurately identified or treated. Often, women's concerns regarding PMS are not taken seriously which leads to feelings of self-doubt, frustration and hopelessness.

If you are interested in participating in a confidential research project exploring the labyrinth of PMS and PMDD, or if you need comprehensive, timely information, please read on. The Understanding PMS site is divided into five sections to make navigation easy. To get the most out of this site, please visit each link. (Just click on the buttons.) A wealth of useful information awaits.

Deborah Robbins is the Executive Director of The PMS Research Project as well as the managing editor and head writer for the publication series Transition... the passage into wellness® and the Understanding PMS Web site. Through her company, VizAbility Print Communications, she graciously publishes Transition pro-bono. This ensures the complete series is affordable and available world-wide while providing readers an invaluable, advertisement-free publication.

Deborah's approach is sui generis; she is an award-winning professional writer and researcher with 14 years experience. She has conducted this research unencumbered by the constrained beliefs of conventional medical theory. Editors have labelled her 'The Jane Goodall of PMS research'; a monicker she humbly embraces.

Since its inception in 1996 The PMS Research Project has strived to provide comprehensive information to help women understand and learn to control their symptoms of PMS.

After countless hours of research, interviews and scientific inquiry The PMS Program® evolved. This ground-breaking program embraces the principles of natural medicine and enables women with PMS to treat the cause of the problem instead of merely masking the symptoms.

By addressing individual symptoms in a proactive manner, The PMS Program represents a path of treatment that could change the way conventional medicine views premenstrual syndrome.

The vast majority of women report that they have discovered a new awareness and understanding of their physical and emotional self through The PMS Program featured monthly in the publication, Transition...the passage into wellness.

Women (and men) say that the Understanding PMS web site and the on-line questionnaires have given them hope and food for thought. Deborah is truly grateful for such comments--both as a woman and a writer.

Deborah knows the complexities of PMS intimately. She suffered from premenstrual dysphoric disorder--the most severe form of PMS--for over 20 years. She shuffled repeatedly from doctor to pharmacist, and fell through the cracks in the medical system many times along the way. In 1996, her overwhelming need to 'take control' became the catalyst for The PMS Research Project.

"For 20 years PMDD was a destructive and debilitating entity in my life." she says. "Today all my symptoms are controlled, and in many cases eliminated, as a result of this proactive, natural program of unified nutritional and lifestyle practices. If I can beat this, anyone can. After all, I first had to develop the program -- all you have to do is follow it. When someone hands you the tools to build a better life, grasp them with enthusiasm."

In 1997 The PMS Program was successfully tested through a controlled study. Since then, thousands of women have found relief from their symptoms through The PMS Program available through the publication series Transition...the passage into wellness.

While your questions and comments are always welcome, please read through the entire Understanding PMS site first. (Just click on the buttons.) You will find the answers to the most frequently asked questions.

If you are ready and willing to learn how to 'take control' and conquer PMS, the monthly publication, Transition... the passage into wellness, will provide you with unprecedented information, timely research, motivation, and support.

"Your interest is greatly appreciated, and I hope the resulting body of work will--with candour and compassion--shed welcome light on the complexity and confusion surrounding PMS and offer hope to the millions of women struggling with premenstrual syndrome."

Take Care...Take Control ®

No one really knows what causes PMS. Research suggests PMS is probably due to hormonal changes that occur before each period. It isn't clear why some women have symptoms that have a major effect on their lives while other women don't.

Making a few changes in your nutritional habits might alleviate several physical and emotional PMS symptoms. The following suggestions are supported by evidence from clinical studies.

Take several (around six) small meals a day. Don't go for more than three hours without food.
Decrease intake of refined sugar, salt, red meat, alcohol, and caffeine (coffee, tea, soft drinks with caffeine, chocolate).
Increase intake of complex carbohydrates, leafy green vegetables, fruit, cereals, and whole grains.
Take vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) supplement. Doses between 50 mg and 300 mg daily are usually sufficient to alleviate PMS symptoms. Do not exaggerate the doses, as side effects (numbness and tingling in the hands and feet) may occur with megadoses of vitamin B6 (the side effects are reversible and disappear after discontinuation of the vitamin).
Take vitamin E supplement. Doses of 600 IU daily can decrease the tenderness of the breasts and size of breast lumps.
Take Magnesium supplement (look for amino acid-chelated magnesium). Magnesium relieves sugar craving and breast tenderness. Doses of 300-500 mg/day are efficacious, and are needed only during the time when the symptoms are present.
Take primrose oil, around 1500 mg per day. This supplement should relieve mood swings, irritability and depression symptoms.

Thought I should ask everyone. I am considered a nef.
I don't think anything I've ever posted has been "uninformative", and I average less than a post a day. Yet people like millenium "label" me as a neff, in the same topic they've posted 4 messages in without saying anything, and they average 3 , 5, 10, 20 posts a day?
Just thought that if you want to call ME a nef, maybe you should have a lower post average.

I average 2.7 you fool. I have been here way longer than you. If you want to talk about PMS go somewhere else. You don't get respect by posting gibberish. Whoa 2.7 a day! What a nef I am. Read back over your posts. Either you are really really stupid or really really social inept. I think a combo of the two. But remember, this is not a medical opinion.

Yeah I see that...
but mathematically 2.7 > 1
if you can't connect PMS with a member being b1tchy and starting a post to b1tch me out, it's not my fault.

<edit> I don't rate people, but my friends probably do

I do not connect it.

1. I am a male.
2. You are a dumbass
3. You are a nef
4. I probably kicked your ass at sometime in my life.
5. Read the title of this thread.

1) Inbred "bammins" would pose no threat to "kicking my @ss"
2) None of the posts on this topic are anything but gibberish, including yours
3) If the title of this post isn't intended to b1tch me out, you don't know what b1tching out means.

I thought you might ask about my friends.
All of them have either been banned, or believe that anandtech is for f a g s.
they are all members at AGN and the [H]ardforum, or other boards, where you don't get banned for expressing your opinions

and as far as a "difference of opinions" or a "fight" that we may have with each other. We both know we're just wasting our time. Everyone here would rush to your side, and I could attempt to futilly keep up with the pace of the posts, inevitably falling behind. If you don't like my posts, fine. I'll probably piss everyone off at one time or another. But don't expect an explanation.

BTW, I never said YOU b1tched me out.

what? That's it?
The threat of beating me in a "flame war" is answered with "I have to go to bed."
I expected more, but if that's the way it's going to be, fine.
being called a nef has just got me all choked up and broken down, I mean sh1t, to be condemned by probably the finest folks here at anandtech. You guys are the top guns, I guess I'll never amount to anything in my life. It's just too hard to come up with posts as original as ":)" and "poll: who gives a sh1t about anything". You guys are way out of my league.

Not to generalize. I know I've brought all this on myself. I did it because i wanted to. And if anandtech bans me for whatever I did, it only proves how weak it is. I can't see what I've done wrong...yet.

I'm with you KurtDavidson,

it seems that if you post your opinion here, and one person does not agree with it, you will first get flamed and then banned.

I mean, just because we haven't married our computers and get out of the house, people just don't seem to like us.

I guess if we started describing our PC's to people, we would be accepted here!

Don't get me wrong, there are some good people here, you know, the ones who just like computers as hobbies.

Then you have the ones who sound like what they do to their computers is illegal in 48 states! I mean, when you see their posts, it is so very sad.
