If you plan on seeing Opeth during their US tour this year

That stuff can't be good for their throats.

I forget which band I was going to see, but they had to cancel a couple of weeks of their concerts (including mine) because the singer lost his voice due to too much growling.

From my understanding there are methods to prevent damaging yourself while growling, but I would imagine it is difficult to do for a long time

I'm not a HUGE fan of death metal, but Opeth is one of my favorite bands. Damnation is one of my least favorite albums. I won't judge Heritage until I buy and listen to it (today). I hope I like it better.

I'm glad I saw this because I was about to buy tickets for a show in Orlando. I've seen them 3 times already. I'll pass on this one...

It's good but the set list was very strange indeed. I've also seen them a number of times so it was cool to get something that wasn't what I expected.

Isn't their new album pretty different? Maybe they're changing their style. Not too surprising that they'd cut out the growling, as that's a big turnoff for a lot of people.

Hetfield rarely had problems with his voice on tour, and Metallica toured a LOT.

But all the growling did eventually take it's toll on his voice, so it's probably a smart move overall.

Hetfield was not ever a growler...

Huh? If you're trying to make a disctinction between growling and screaming, that's just silly. 😛

To me growling means to distort your voice.

Ozzy doesn't growl. Rob Halford doesn't growl.

Hetfield definitely growls.

The guy from Disturbed had to have surgery a way back because the stuff that he did with his voice caused some severe acid reflux and it was eating away stuff. He started doing less of that stuff.

All That Remains has cancelled several appearances because the guy lost his voice.

Interesting. I wanted to see them next week, but my work and class schedule has prevented that.

Their new album is fantastic, really. Yeah, it's not metal and very different, but so, so good.

I feel like I'm one of the few Opeth fans that recognizes Akerfeldt for his musicianship, not his ability to write good metal and have awesome growls. I won't miss his growls one bit because he has a fantastic singing voice and still writes great music. Switching to a different type of genre and still being awesome is no small feat.
