If you pick up a pizza, do you tip?

There is this pizza place close by my house that I go to at least once a week. I usually order the same thing. They know be their by name, but I never tip. Now I go there because its a cheap, quick, good pizza. Tipping would defeat the purpose of me buying the pizza there and not cook a digiorno, as the tip would put me over the cost of the home baked pizza. Now I'm not trying to be a cheap person or anything, but should I really be tipping when I pick up the pizza myself?

What is the standard protocol on things like this?

Do they have a tip jar out front? Eh, I don't see any reason you should have to tip, but when I'm a regular a place I don't mind throwing a buck or two their way every so often.

We get Pho once a week. He thinks that not tipping (on takeout) is rude. I tell him that he's a fucking idiot if he thinks that someone needs an extra $2 just to pour some soup in a bowl.

Yeah I might tip a dollar every once in a while if I got take out from the same place often enough and they were really friendly and the food was consistently excellent.
Otherwise, no.

I usually tip $1 to takeaway places if I call ahead.

Most of the time the person taking phone orders and preparing/sacking the order is making the same $2/hour that the other wait staff are. The difference is they typically see a lot more customers per shift. Your average dining room waiter might see 25 customers a night waiting 4 tables. The takeaway person might see triple that if it's a popular/busy place.

There is one place, a local BBQ joint that has excellent food but terrible service and rude staff. I still eat their food because it's great but I don't tip those people anymore. They suck!

Remember folks, you don't have to tip anywhere. You tip because you want to.

Do you tip the cashier in a supermarket or a Wal-Mart? Why the hell would you tip the cashier in a pizza place? You tip for service, the guy bringing the pizza to your house is a service. Taking your money at a counter is not.

When I do pickup on a pizza its almost exactly like fast food to me, and I dont tip fast food.

Also I agree with Lothar. Either they spit on your food or they dont. If you think they do then obviously dont go there anymore. The kind of person who would actually do that doesnt need a good reason, they do it just because. I have avoided shady-looking places with angry teen employees specifically for that reason.
