We're paying 1.45 ?/L (? 5.3 per gallon) here in the Netherlands, ofcourse having 65% tax on gas doesn't help.

On the "good" side, it only takes you a couple of hours to cross the country.

I just can't afford a new car. I am making payments on my used car still. When I have it paid off I think it'll be time for a Civic Hybrid. I hope something better will be out in two years...something that'll get at least 100MPG. That'd rock.

My '05 Grand Prix gets 20/30 so besides getting a hybrid there aint too much better..and those still arent worth the initial investment..and with increasing gas prices those prices would go up even more..$7 a gallon would hurt, i'd take the bus to school

I go through about 12 gallons per week average. For me to consider an "economy" car, Fuel would need to be over $6 a gallon.

This is a really good question. I'm not sure honestly at what point I care.

I have two vehicles that both get around ~14 mpg city. The one that I take on the highway gets about 17.

HOWEVER, eco-nazis, I only drive 15 miles a day on a regular basis. (going to work, shopping, etc) So I use a gallon of gas a day.

So... does it really matter to me if I spend $2 a day or $3 a day or $4 a day? It is inconvenient, but it doesn't necessarily change my life.

The difference for me though does come in longer car trips - a ride home to see my parents is 500 miles round trip. So there - we're talking a $65 trip vs a $100 trip, and suddenly it seems like I might decide to stay home that particular weekend...

I drive about 15,000 miles a year, and my landcruiser gets about 15MPG
So that's about 1000 gallons/year in gas.

I can't see getting rid of the cruiser - I tow a trailer often enough + snow, camping, etc. that I'd hate to be without a truck. I'd like to get a smaller, more efficient car for normal driving/commute, but gas would have to get very high to make that viable on gas savings alone. At $3/gallon, a 30MPG car would only save me $1500/year. $2000/year @ $4/gallon. And that's assuming I used the car for everything, which isn't likely. Just insuring a second car would eat a big chunk of that, never mind the actual purchase price.

I dunno - maybe if I could find a nice 10 - 15 year old civic for about $4K I might consider it.

On my c5 vette in rush hour traffic I get 17-18mpg. I drive 10400 miles I year just to work.
Thats 611 gallons a year.
A Prius gets about 60mpg so uses 173g a year

At $3/$4/$5
$/yr savings 1315/1754/2192
$/mo saving 109/146/182

My car payment is $321 now a Prius would cost me about $450/mo with no down payment

So the vette payment + gas difference is

430/467/503

So gas has to get to at least $4 a gallon to get a vehicle that will TRIPLE my mpg.
The two cars are worth about the same at dealer retail right now, but the prius would depriciate quicker initially (being a new car) But the insurance would likely be lower. If gas hits $5 a gallon it'll be time to seriously consider a switch. $4 is more or less a wash. I always have my motorcyle for a "fun" toy.

I would just drive a lot less before i bought a new car simply for the milage. IMO, it doesn't make much since to go out and buy a new car at inflated prices just to save some money at the pump, that you could save easily enough some other way...ie driving less.

I have never been able to afford a new car, and the used market is filled with poor mileage vehicles. If I ever get enough money together to afford a honda insight, then I'll get one. That would be at least two years away optimistically.

If you own a fairly new vehicle, I doubt you'll have a net gain if any from the entire transaction (depending on how much you drive of course). It's like people paying more for a hybrid, most of them won't actually save money since they spent a few grand more on the car. (A few of them will save money)

I've started doing public transit, i've had it calculated out for a while now, that at the point in which gas goes to 2.9 a gallon, it's cheaper to go public transit(based on the currently priced monthly passes)

edit - i've got a 4runner that gets 20mpg and a Suburban that goes 15mpg, i share with my brother, so we switch off, whatever. I drive a total of 10 miles(round trip) to work 5 times a week, though sometimes i take the bus, and i take the light-rail to school everyday, so as someone else stated it's about $8 - 12 a week in gas, not terrible. I used to have to drive to school, a 30 mile commute, i'd have died. Thank goodness for public transit!

i get 25 MPG from my 14 year old accord wagon. i'd like something that got more mileage, but the used accord is so cheap to run that if i replaced it with anything else that meets my needs, i'd be paying more money in the long run.
