I don't drive often enough to care at any price point. I will continue driving my 14mpg car mostly on weekends because I enjoy it... especially more than an econobox. I hated my wife's Accord.

So what price level would gas have to be for you to say "screw it........ I'm getting a fuel efficient car"?

it's hard to justify b/c often times you just break even after the loss on selling a used car and buying a new one. it would have to get pretty bad for me to switch out my car (VR6 which gets about 25mpg combined highway/city) and get somethign more effecient.

I'm getting about 18 mpg on the highway, and a little less around town. I'm not sure what I'd do yet.

Their fault. Just because it's expensive there doesn't mean we have to take it.

To me its just the cost of living and I don't really consider it when purchasing a car. If there is a car that I want and it has good gas milage...thats just icing on the cake.

I pay approximately $120/month for gas for a car that is paid for and has little resale value. To replace it would cost ~$5000.00 for a car I would probably like less. Mileage would probably double so at current rates I would save ~$700 year in gas. At current prices it would take about eight years to recoup the cost of a more efficient car. Given wear and tear over those eight years it isn't worth it right now.

At $5/gal the time to recoup would be ~four years. At that price it might be worth replacing the car.

Maintenance costs are bigger issue for making the decision.

I get 15 city / 20 hwy in my QX4. It sucks paying around $40 to fill it up, but it lasts me 300 miles or so (17-18 gallons fills her up).

It costs me about $180 / month in gas right now at 15,000 miles per year. I guess it would take about $300 / month or so to get me to trade in for a smaller ride.

By my calculations that would be $4.08 / gallon.

Agreed on both counts.

If it got REALLY bad, I'd get some crapbox for the commute to work (have one already, but no place to park it), and drive the other car on weekends and in my leisure time. I would never ditch it completely.

my rsx-s gets about 27-28 mpg. I would get a lil better mileage if I didn't have the a/c on and constantly revving abobe 7k rpm. haha. I need to hit VTEC BABY.

if gas hits above 4 dollars... i think i'll go with a hybrid then.
camry hybrid here i come?

I don't get the greatest mileage (17/25), but it's decent. I just paid over $40 to fill up last week for the first time, and I'd rather not pay that much, but my car only cost $2000 - and the cost and hassle of replacing it with a tiny econobox that I wouldn't like, isn't worth it. ;) Not to mention that I only really drive a lot during the summer; when I'm up at the university I usually only drive 10-15 miles per week with the occasional road trip. I'd probably change my driving habits at maybe $4-5 a gallon; changing the car itself probably still wouldn't be worth it at that point.

I live in Alaska so I need 4WD and it has to be big enough for me to survive a collision with some n00b military wife who doesn't know how to drive in the snow. So the extra money I spend on gas is worth it.

This thread is kind of silly anyway... Say you drive 1000 miles a month. One car gets 20mpg and another gets 30mpg. You're going to buy 50 gallons a month or 33. Even at $5/gallon, is it worth buying another car to save $85 a month? At $3/gallon it's only $51 a month.

I can't afford to get something different. But If i could afford it, i'd say $3.50.

Vehic 1 - 75 gallon tank, 480 - 520 miles to the tank
Vehic 2 - 11 gallon tank, 380 - 420 miles to the tank

Guess which one I drive more? But anyway, it doen't matter. Probably around $4 a gallon I wouldn't drive the 1st one all that much. I don't drive it much now. Still being pieced together anyway.
