if you never get a SSN are you still required to pay into the system?

I don't know... I was reading on Wikipedia recently that there are some people who manage to get through life without ever getting a SSN, but it didn't really give any details about it.

You get an SSN with your birth certificate. Impossible!!!
Incorrect

Some one (usually parents) will apply for a SSN using the birth certificate.

If one does not want to work within the US legally; have legal income, be claimed as a dependant /spouse on a tax return or get any type of government benefit; you can go without a SSN.

Any of the above will require a SSN
