the only dangerous reptile we have here are snapping turtles. They are about the most mean tempered, ornery creatures I have seen.

Snapping turtles, at least to my experience, are universally some mean bastards. Doesn't matter what size they are, they will try their best to fuck you up.

Them snapping turtles probably have more attitude than most of the citizens. At least from my experience ;)

If Canadians had the attitudes of snapping turtles the US would be the United States of Cannuckistan by now. Those fuckers are downright mean as hell.

We did that with a 6 footer diamondback a few years ago. A guy caught him and after catching the snake in a Rubbermaid tub, he brought him to my neighbor's house. He cut the head off with a shovel, but then called a leather worker to sell the skin....so while the body of the 6 foot rattler convulsed on the ground, sans head, he grabbed a pocket knife and started skinning the thing alive.....basically, peeling the skin back so he could sell it.

It was one of the more brutal things I saw as a 16 year old.

My luck it would be the day that I just finished the bottle because who can't resist drinking vodka when it's in their pocket? My last thoughts would be "When my wife dies and joins me in heaven she is never going to let me hear the end of it, I told you that your drinking would kill you! She will literally be able to turn heaven into hell, fuck me."

lulz.

by the way...when have you ever seen a slimy snake? I believe the only snake-like thing you will encounter that is actually slimy, is one of those lizards with the wee legs.

I don't think this applies to glass lizards, but those small gross things, that smell like horseshit and you often find under rotten wood in your yard, are also lizards. Those are definitely slimy.

The difference is that mosquitoes have no benefit and are a huge danger. Snakes provide a huge benefit and treated with respect are not very dangerous. Your fear/hated of mosquitoes is based on fact, your fear/hatred of snakes is based on ignorance. Snakes and spiders are our friends, not our enemies.

Actually, it's most likely evolutionary/endemic to our nature. It may be "stupid" because our knowledge of these creatures today is far superior to that of our stone-aged ancestors from 20k years ago, and even further, 3million+ years ago, but most humans have these very common fears for a reason. Even dogs and other animals tend to recognize classic "threat" animals like snakes over other creatures.

But then, they actually were killing us at a greater clip way back when, so the fear is somewhat justified.

Skinks? Nah. They're just shiny like snakes. Not slimy at all.

Salamanders? Amphibians (but you knew that)

Though it can be musty under a rotting log, there's no particular smell that I associate with salamanders or skinks. I messed around with those critters a lot when I was a kid.

Well, it *should* be superior. But if you listen to the rantings of the people that hate snakes they almost invariable use the word "slimey". So their feelings are clearly based on ignorance, not knowledge. Science has established that humans do have a reflexive, innate fear of snakes and spiders, we come out of the womb with 50-100 million years of evolutionary experience teaching us to fear creepy crawly things. Fear kept our ancestors alive, avoiding all snakes was smart. But back then people were afraid of pretty much everything because they understood nothing, That's not the case now. Humans, especially humans in this part of the world, have plenty of resources and information at their disposal and should easily be able to figure out that snakes are beneficial and not at all slimey. Remaining afraid of snakes is a choice, not hard-wired at the DNA level and it's a choice born of ignorance. These people have the information that snakes are okay, they just willfully ignore it to cling to a superstition.

Ashamed, as a Southerner, that I didn't even know what they were until a few years ago.

Had a ~5" blue one sunning on my concrete last weekend and a larger female scrambling behind the shrubs.

Yeah, just like people who are afraid of heights, even when it is safe, make a choice to be afraid of heights. :confused_old:
