If you live "far" from where you work, why?

Inspired by this thread. A long trip to work is often cited as a reason to "need" multiple cars in the family. I'm really curious about how some of you live very far from work. The furthest I ever had to go was 35ish miles, I would either car pool (i.e. help pay for gas and tolls b/c I have no car) or bike-to-train-to-bike there (and would do so again if I work there again someday).

If this is a repost point me to the other thread(s)!

I live at home right now which costs me nothing... So this is why I live far from work. I'm only 20 by the way.

i live 20 miles from where i live. i ride with my dad who has a company truck so i don't spend very much gas money.

the shop is moving to my town though within the net year.

This was my commute for 4 months, I'm now staying at a friend's house during the week to avoid my daily commute.

Daily Commute

Average time each way was 2+ hours. It was killing me so I opted to stay in town during the week, if all goes well I'll be at a new job by the end of the month with a 2 mile commute to work 🙂

I live 25 miles from work, which is long for me being used to a 2 mile commute. My wife works 15 miles away in the dead opposite direction. There are a couple of people I could carpool with, but frankly sometimes I have to work late, sometimes they have to work late, it's just not worth it getting stuck at work for 2 hours b/c someone in the carpool got roped into to high-priority issue at 5:45.

I could move closer to work but A) it's in the ghetto, B) surrounding non-ghetto areas are absurdly expensive, C) I like where I am - low taxes, close to major cities, great school system, D) closer to my work just ends up being farther for my wife so it's no different. As long as both of us continue in our current jobs, we have 40 miles between us.

I could take the train, but there is a bus connection to my building and to be perfectly honest, the place where you wait for the bus outside the train station is just way too sketchy.

I live 50 miles away from work. I like where I'm at, so I'm not moving. I'd quit my job before I moved.

I work to live; I don't live to work. Enjoying life is the most important thing... working isn't my goal, it's just a means to an end.

Right, that's what I'm getting at. How come you haven't looked for a job closer? 100 miles of driving seems like waste of time, not to mention all the environmental stuff and increased transpo cost (but I'm interested in why -- let's keep that other stuff out for now).

44 miles

the urban part of KC is not livable by my standards, especially in the school dept. no human being should send their child to KC govt. school. so if you want to live in KC , you have to make enough $$$ for private school if you have children
murders are double last years rate and will exceed 100 by october/november time frame

the general metropolitan area is good, but the city itself it a disaster

so we moved way out to the country to avoid all the bad stuff, but still where i can keep my job, which is a good job

I used to live in Gilroy, Ca and commute to Menlo Park, Ca. 52 freaking miles each way. Reason for commute? I lived at home and it was practically free as I tried to pay off all my bills and get back on my feet.

Now... less than 3/4 mile from work. You'd have to double my salary to get me to give this up.

All my friends and family live near where I'm at now. If I move to get closer to my job, I'm moving away from friends/family.

I've had friends who have moved away to take a job, and I ended up losing touch with them. It becomes too inconvenient for them to drive to my house to hang out. In the end, they chose their job over their friends. One of them recently got laid off and tried calling me, but I'm not going to follow up on that. I have no time for fair weather friends.

live in nyc, take the train to stamford. its about 40 miles i think.

commute aint so bad...and i don't want to move to stamford. so i deal with it for now

not sure how many miles... let's say 35km or approx. 40-minute commute.

our home marks the midway point between our jobs and our hometown. we don't like living in the city and the location we found was a brand-new subdivision. there is a nice treeline @ the rear of our property which was the biggest selling point. not much other than that i suppose.

My employer doesn't pay me enough to move closer. Seriosuly, the cost of living is much higher where my employer is.
I don't understand why I would move 20-25 miles just to be closer to my employer. That is a huge hassle considering that I probably won't be here for more than a couple years.

I live in town, and work at a pulp mill 40 kilometers away (25 miles). It is mostly highway driving, but I damn near smoked a deer this morning. I'm getting tired of the commute already, and I do carpool, but I always drive. I'd love to buy an acreage somewhere between home and work, but the ideal spot hasn't presented itself yet, and we purchased our current beautiful home not long ago.

I used to be 15 miles from work but moved so that I am now 20 miles away. I like the new neighborhood and don't mind the commute (avg ~30 min). I would not move closer unless somone gave me a nice house over there. I was looking at a place just up the hill from work (less than 2 miles) but it was over $500k, old, and small (1200 sq ft). My new place was $330k, brand new, and 1610 square feet, so it works for me.

You guys talk of moving home closer to work. I'm wondering why those who can don't move work closer to home?

50 miles each way - commute per day is about 2 hours.

Why?

1] Got a descent job.
2] I live where I can get the best help for my child...that happens to be 50 miles from my job.

I sort of agree, no kids to worry about though. I work in downtown KC, live in Overland Park.
