I'm a huge DT and Rush fan who's looking for more music.

In the past, I've been suggested Queensryche (sp?) "Operation Mindcrime," which I loved but my wife hated.

Does anyone have other suggestions in this category?

Try "The Quiet Room" on Metalblade Records and "Fates Warning" also on Metalblade.

Oh and check out Geddy Lee's solo album "My Favorite Headache"...good stuff! ;) You can D/L the single from that album on the start page.

You know, I'm having troubles with "My Favorite Headache."

It refuses to play in my car. I have the same problem as if I used a greenback CD-R or burn to fast. What's up with this CD?

That's a strange one Bdawg!

It goes without saying but, I would suggest bringing it back to the store you bought it from and exchange it or have them play that particular CD on their system to see if it works. You're missing a fairly good album otherwise.

Man Muc!!!

That's a lot of alternatives! Gotta try 'em.

Does "Grace to Grace" go off...or what?
Matt Cameron does a great job on percussion.

The thing with prog-rock is that there are so many bands that don't get any exposure...

so far my faves of MFH are :

My Favorite Headache
Working at Perfeckt
Home on the Strange

I love em all, but these really stick out for me.

If you really like the late 80's Rush stuff I suggest Marillion... great band.

Thanks Entity, but I already knew about LTE. :)

Now that Jordan joined DT, they pretty much are DT. :)

Whoa. Rush alternatives? :) I was just looking for my Rush CDs as I stumbled across this thread. Guess I'll have to try these CDs now. I've never heard Dream Theater, but have heard a lot of good things about them. From what I've heard, VAST is similar in overall "presence". (Also have never heard VAST)

Liquid Tension Experiment (Paradigm Shift) sounds like Rush and Yes mixed with a little adrenaline...what a trip! Man, it's too close to Christmas to be going out and buying all these new CD's but now I'm hooked...Thanks a Lot guys!!!

Is that a whole different band or is LTE a title of a DT album?

Actuallly, both Wingnut...

Liquid Tension Experiment is a seperate band who's members are,

John Petrucci, Dream Theater's guitarist
Mike Portnoy, Dream Theater's drummer
Jordan Rudess, Dream Theater's, keyboardist since Metropolis Pt. 2
and Tony Levin who played bass for Peter Gabriel and King Crimson (thanks Entity).

Coincidentally, LTE's albums are called "Liquid Tension Experiment 1 & 2," respectively.

All they lack from being Dream Theater is James LaBrie' vocals and John Myung's bass (did I get his name right?).

The first Marillion song I heard was Easter which was played on the Dream Theater : Once in a Livetime video. The guitarist reminded me of Alex Lifeson so much (guitar playing and looks :)). Their stuff is hard to find locally but I managed to pick up a compilation CD of them... I love the whole thing.

I totally forgot about LTE because I haven't listened to it in a while since my friend lost the CD :(

gonna have to check out the bands Rendus, and Ratkil mentioned... I love hearing bands I haven't heard before :)

I also forgot to mention The God Machine, tough to find but I really like them. Some may also consider The Flaming Lips prog-rock, but just not as heavy.

Ratkil, please tell me what else you got!!! I just going to Savatage and Trans Siberian Orchestra after I heard some samples! They are exactly what I like! Savatage has a lot of albums though, which ones do you reccomend.

Mucman, anything from Gutter Ballet (1989) forward from Savatage is very good. I really haven't listened to the stuff before that much. Gutter Ballet and Streets, had a different lead singer then the ones after, He died. They have another album coming out early next year, but now their singer and one other member have left, so I don't know how that will affect them. Streets and The Wake Of Magellan are rock operas. The live albums are quite good also, they sound damn near as good live as they do on the albums.

Trans Siberian has two christmas albums and a rock opera. The opera, Beethoven's Last Night, is a little mellower than the savatage stuff. Trans Siberian is actually touring now, but they broke into two different bands to tour, not sure what that will sound like. They are in St Louis next week but I am out of town, and yes, that does bite! :|

One of the members of Savatage also did an album with the name Doctor Butcher, I wasn't too impressed. Very hard and very crude lyrics.

You already like Marillion, so not sure what others I could mention, check out the albums Headless Children and Crimson Idol by Wasp espically the last one, that is another rock opera that is awesome. If you like female lead singers, Doro is pretty good. If you just want some more suggestions Waysted, Thunder, Tora Tora, Paul Laine, Pretty Maids, Tyketto, Hardline.

wow, that ended up much longer then I intended, sorry everyone. :(

Thanks Ratkil! I just ordered the first TSO album... I will look into the others. If I don't buy them right away I will add them the my CD wishlist (which is 100+ CD's long right now :)).

btw, has anyone given Spocks Beard, or Gentle Giant a listen? I would reccomend Beware of Darkness (Spocks Beard) and Octopus (Gentle Giant).
