if you left work right now...

would anyone notice?

I'm pretty sure I could just walk out the door. the one coworker I have who works in the same building as me is at home today and I'm not working on anything important, just boring administrative stuff (emailing client notifications about server issues that we need downtime to fix to clients who haven't been responding to our emails for a month+ now)

edit: foiled! my boss *just* called me. if I had left work after posting the OP, someone would indeed have noticed.

i can leave whenever i want as long as i get my job done. but no, no one would notice unless one of the systems i support broke and called someone else instead of me. if the guys here have questions they call my cell even if im at my desk, lol. usually ill walk over to their desk while talking to them.

Yeah ppl would notice. A lot of them poke their heads into my office [area] to just say a passing hi, and when I am not around they go "where's Patrick?"

Probably not, but then I'd have to either use vacation time or lie on my timesheets. I'm salaried but I still have to fill in how many hours I spend on the projects I'm working on.

No one would notice, and if anyone called me they would just think I am working on some problem somewhere else.

Don't think I haven't thought of this before...

I work in a middle school, it is summer, summer school out at noon, and I'm the only person in the building. Pretty safe bet no one would know I'm gone.

Well, the fact that you even considered this proves that you could be a potentially less than honest employee. I wouldn't hire ya. Would you have failed to clock out too, or maybe come back at the end of the shift and clock out?

So everyone who has even thought about whether someone would notice if they left is "potentially less than honest" and not deserving of a job? Wow.

I wouldn't actually do it. it's fun to consider and I might take a long lunch on occasion to go run an errand or two, but I'd never put my job in jeopardy just to leave an hour and a half early.

FWIW, we don't have time sheets or any type of punch in/out system. well, we have to send departmental shift reports at the end of every shift, but I could easily do that from home (not that I would).

Would anyone care/would I get in trouble? No.

Am I going to do it? Not unless it's an emergency.

This. Except for me.

Read the 4 Hour Work Week if you are really looking for ways to get out of the office. It has a pretty good game plan on helping make that possible. Not sure how feasible it would be with the current recessionary environment, but I have certainly had jobs in the past where there was no real need to actually be at work.

On a Monday....most definitely. On this particular Monday they noticed when I left the building for 5 min to get a sandwich.

If I'm gone for more than 10 minutes, without fail, I have a Communicator message from someone in the office. Now I'm pretty sure I could fake it using my laptop and Sprint card, but then someone would actually come to my office.

Working tech support here, and haven't had any problems for a few days, and if I were to get one when I was gone I'd just say "I'll take care of it tomorrow".
