I'm not trying to offend anyone with this... but the very nature of the topic suggests that some people might be offended. I'm hoping the mods won't feel the need to lock this just because of hurt feelings, though, and that we can actually discuss this!
Ok, let me be honest: I probably make more jokes based on stereotypes than anyone I know: blacks, jews, old white men, women, retards, savants, christians, autistics, cancer patients, skinheads, soccer moms, pedo priests, muslims, asians, nerds, etc... if I find something funny, I laugh at it. I can't help it: I don't choose what amuses me and makes me laugh any more than I choose what to sneeze at! And I think to myself: hey, if I find it funny, other people probably do too.
For example, this just makes me ROFL: PIC
I don't feel bad about laughing at this stuff, though, because I don't actually judge people in "real life" based on stereotypes. I mean, it's considered a "joke" for a reason, right?
A couple years ago I held a sign at an anti-abortion rally that said "IF THE GLOVE DON'T FIT, YOU MUST ACQUIT" -- not to make some political point, but just because I thought it was funny!
I don't go about my day treating blacks or jews differently because I think of them as "slaves" or "covetous", nor do I look at every priest I see and think "good thing I left the kids at home!"
I can understand that people who consider themselves to be the brunt of these jokes might feel like I'm being insensitive, but does any joke exist that doesn't "make fun" of something?
I just don't equate laughter with inequality -- am I wrong? Am I a racist for laughing at a black guy advocating slavery?
