If you laugh at racial jokes, does that make you racist?

I'm not trying to offend anyone with this... but the very nature of the topic suggests that some people might be offended. I'm hoping the mods won't feel the need to lock this just because of hurt feelings, though, and that we can actually discuss this!

Ok, let me be honest: I probably make more jokes based on stereotypes than anyone I know: blacks, jews, old white men, women, retards, savants, christians, autistics, cancer patients, skinheads, soccer moms, pedo priests, muslims, asians, nerds, etc... if I find something funny, I laugh at it. I can't help it: I don't choose what amuses me and makes me laugh any more than I choose what to sneeze at! And I think to myself: hey, if I find it funny, other people probably do too.

For example, this just makes me ROFL: PIC

I don't feel bad about laughing at this stuff, though, because I don't actually judge people in "real life" based on stereotypes. I mean, it's considered a "joke" for a reason, right?

A couple years ago I held a sign at an anti-abortion rally that said "IF THE GLOVE DON'T FIT, YOU MUST ACQUIT" -- not to make some political point, but just because I thought it was funny!

I don't go about my day treating blacks or jews differently because I think of them as "slaves" or "covetous", nor do I look at every priest I see and think "good thing I left the kids at home!"

I can understand that people who consider themselves to be the brunt of these jokes might feel like I'm being insensitive, but does any joke exist that doesn't "make fun" of something?

I just don't equate laughter with inequality -- am I wrong? Am I a racist for laughing at a black guy advocating slavery?

less than half of that list are races

Yes, but they all have associated stereotypes. Which is why I named that list "stereotypes I make fun of."

I laughed at that picl.

Now if a neo-Nazi skinhead kid was wearing the same shirt, that could be a slightly different story.

He is not advocating slavery. He probably just thought the shirt was funny. I laughed at it and I don't get uptight at Chris Rock making making fun of whitey.

It always depends on the intent behind it. If you laugh at someone else's joke, that's alright. If you say the joke as a joke, that's alright. If you say anything as a backhanded comment against a race like a few people I've seen here, then it's not. Telling someone to grow thicker skin or "learn to take a joke" doesn't absolve you of your intent.

comedians regularly poke fun at topics like this...it's in humor, not serious.

Certain things are off topic like making a joke about 9-11 now may not draw much adversion, cracking a joke at ground zero may get one beat down.

What I find here is people use such jokes as a threat/taunt rather than trying to be funny...

I can appreciate the humor in anything. Can be the most racist, offensive joke and I'll still keel over laughing. The wit behind it I can appreciate.

that pic is hilarious. i dont think it makes you racist, i both enjoy and tell jokes about all kinds of races/ stereotypes. funny is funny.

If it's meant as a put down or to perpetuate stereotypes, it's not ok.

Umm....all racial jokes are based off stereotypes.

Because stereotypes are fucking hilarious.
