If you knew now we would have another Great Depression in 2010

Form a collective
Buy surplus ICBM silo
stock up on non-perishables
get farm, feed and livestock
learn how to farm
learn how to shoot

Hiding money under the pillow and the lack of confidence in banks where part of the domino effects that led to the great depression.

You're all missing the obvious solution to another great depression. Bomb Pearl Harbor.

Right answer: Wait till sandorski buys farm land, then shoot him with guns/ammo. Now I have both.

Maybe someone should read up on what happened last time. Law and Order held up reasonably well. It wasn't a world of roving gangs of Pillagers.

I would sell my house, cash out my 401K, sell my stock, and try to buy the biggest plot of arable land that I could within a 3 or 4 hour commute of my job with whatever cash I had ... Then I'd move in to my mom's house, and go into money saving mode.
During the week I would continue to work at my job.
On weekends, myself, and a few friends would go to the new property and build a fortress.
The money I manage to save between now and the depression would go towards buying supplies and building the fortress.

I'd probably manage to get about 40-50 acres in the middle of nowhere in Wisconsin ... I would plant some apple and cherry trees ASAP, I would also build a barn and machine shed. I'd pick up a used tractor, and I'd construct a still ... I'd get a rifle and PLENTY of ammo for it.

With stockpiles of canned/dried foods, as well as with hunting and crops ... a 20 people should be able to live off of the land pretty reasonably. With the still, I should have some moonshine with which I could barter. It wouldn't be fun, but friends and family would be safe.

I would start a window guard business. You know all the buildings on Wall Street will need them to prevent people from jumping, at least that's what I've heard about the Great Depression.
Also buy up land that would be good for a dam, government might want to buy it back.

Last time around, people were actually meeker and far more law abiding/fearful of the law. The same cannot be said now. Hell, looting happened when Rodney King got beat up by the cops. You think law and order will hold when people's purchasing power disappears?

Not as bad as it is for land locked cities in places where there is no way to grow food naturally. Some southwest cities would be much worse off, without even access to water if things went horribly wrong.

Move overseas and start over
Invest in gold

Why would people keep $$ in their mattresses when the dollar isn't going to be worth shit?

Probably nothing. I'm fortunate enough to work in an economy proof busienss (it even thrives in bad economies because of our low end product offerings). I can't see anything happening that wouldn't allow me to keep making house payments and afford food. I might have to cut back on cell phones and sat. TV, but I can live with that.
