I need to buy a system for non-gaming purposes. For those who have just gone through this process, what parts and roughly cost did you do it for - so I can possbily copy cat you. Thank you in advance.

I just want to download 'stuff' run 2 excel spreadsheets, 4 word files, 1 powerpoint file, quickpar and winrar with 3 browser windows open all at the same time.

well spiff.... it really is simple

You are looking at:
Celeron D @2.13 - $60
RAM - PC3200 1GB - $100
Hard Drive - 160 IDE - $100?
Case - $50-450 (depends on taste)
Mobo - $100 tops
DVD burner (to burn all that 'stuff' you are downloading) - $40-60
PSU - $40

All said and told youa re looking at sub-500 for a decent to good stuff machine. If you decide to game and are serious, add about $100 to the processor cost, and another $150-200 for a vid card.

AMD 3000+ winchester = 140.00
TT Venus 12 = 25.00
Antec SLK3000B (silent case with 120mm case fans)= 56.00
NEC 16x DL burner = 34.00
Seagate 120gb HDD = 86.00 (I paid 55 on ebay)
Enermax 460watt Whisper 2 = 76.00 (I paid 50 on ebay)
MSI Neo4-f NF4 sckt939= 86.00
Evga 6600GT = 130 (after rebate)
512mb Patriot Extrem PC3200 cas 2-3-2-5 = 62.00

Total = 695.00

Now you can obviously save a 130 by getting an integrated video platform. You could save a little by getting 80gb HDD, cheaper case, lesser of a cpu, and then apply that to getting another 512mb stick of ram....

This system is a hold over until I drop the 3000+ winchester and drop a 3800+ X2 in there...

I only listed this so you can see you can get a kick arse system for cheap without neutering it and getting a celeron....

Yep!! As long as it is sckt 939.....and ofcourse bios support...All NF4 and NF4U mobos fully support X2's....

If you go budget sckt 939 mobo now and cheap 3000+ chip you could add one later when you need it...

Dump the Venus12 for the XP90 retail for $30 and make it a round $700

side note, if your really wanting to crunch some more $ and still end up with a good hard drive... seagate pata's (200 gb) can usually be had for around $65 to $70 shipped... this involves a rebate but I have 7 of them and saved quite a bit...outpost is good for a deal at least once a month and they all have 5 year warranties

on the average, I am spending 30 to 32 cents per gb for my hard drive space..

ordered 2 last week and they ended up costing me 39.99 + 8.00 freight each
