... and they tell you they will call you by the end of next week, but instead of a phone call they send you a letter snail mail. Do you think this means you didn't get the job? Assuming you can't look at the letter.

It's for a friend of mine. She's flipping out because she didn't get the call and refuses to open the letter. I figured that meant no job, was just making sure. Dumb women.

Hope you have been looking for other jobs because that pretty much is their "professional" way of denying you without having to call you up. That is thoughtful because lately, a lot of places don't even bother you contact you. Very unprofessional.

They are pretty much saying that thanks for interviewing but they chose another candidate for the position but we'll keep your resume on file.

BTW, some places really do keep your resume "on file". I got an interview 3 months after I graduated and was already working somewhere else. I thought handing resumes in at job fairs or applying online was useless... but this instance proved me wrong. When they emailed me out of the blue(Hotmail, of all places).. I just about flipped out and jumped at the chance for the interview.

Unless you've had an interview and they directly tell you no, don't lose hope...

I have received far too many of those responses lately. I've been trying to find a new job in the Jacksonville, FL area (we currently live in VA) and 95% of the replies I've gotten from all my resume submissions have been just like ^^^^.

I did get one job offer though, but it was in Guantanemo (sp?) Bay, Cuba. Without my family. I politely declined. :(

Yep. I hate those letters. Better than vacuous silence I suppose, but I've never been pleased to see a letter in the mail from any company I've applied for a position in.
