If you have to leave a job, how much earlier should you notify them?

Two weeks is pretty much standard.
Yeah, I also think two weeks should be sufficient. I've seen some people get cut as soon as they announced their resignation. It would stink to attempt to play "Mr. Nice Guy" and give them three-weeks notice - only to get released earlier.

hmm, okay thanks guys :)

there's a large project that i'm working on... i feel kind of bad for abandoning them :( the job has a lot of little tidbits that you have to be around for a long time in order to master.... i can't help but feel i'm putting them in a tight spot, with the upcoming release of this large project and all.

it depends on how you want to leave the company. If you're a kid and could care less for references/work performance, leave now. Otherwise, two weeks is sufficable.

I've never had an employer give me as much as 5 minutes notice that I was being downsized or laid off, consequently I never give an employer notice that I am leaving. At the end of my last chosen day I tell the boss I won't be back and he can mail my last check.

I feel no loyalty or obligation (other than doing my work) to any employer.

well, i guess i can understand that.... but my workplace is pretty nice. i've never seen anybody fired in my couple years here, and if they ever did fire anybody, i'm sure it would be for some horrible offense, not "downsizing" (it's a university, i'm sure that has something to do with it). i honestly doubt i'll ever find a place of employment nicer than this :(

i assume hes moving to college station, but i could be wrong.

since its a university you should give a couple weeks notice rather than announcing you won't be back the next day.

It would be just nice to notify us! We just had a new guy work for 5 days, and he hasn't shown up since!

You probably inconvenience your fellow workers more than your boss. By giving no notice, you give no time for them to find a replacement. Do you think your employer picks up the slack at work? Doubt it.

Long, long time ago, I can still remember when I thought I was doing the right thing. Told my boss that I would be leaving in August. I was getting married and relocating. That was June 6th. I was thanked for my thoughtfulness. On June 8th, at the end of the day, I was asked not to come back next day as they found someone to replace me. Nothing personal they said, purely a business decision. Take from this lesson what you will.
