If you had to get a pre-built desktop, what brand would you get?

Dell. I have 3... 1 desktop (2006) and 2 laptops (2005 and 2007.) They are still going strong with few problems. In fact, I just updated my 2005 laptop to keep it going for at least a few more years.

I won't buy HP because I had a $1800 custom built one fail in less than a year.

Dell Vostro (small business) is decent, I've had 2 and a coworker has had another 2, none have had problems.

I've had a small form factor Acer i3-2100 as my music jukebox / media box for about 6 months and am still happy with it.

Depends on what I would be using it for. Basic system? Just about anything works. Use for business? Get a business model from a brand that gives on-site support such as Dell, Lenovo, etc. Gaming? One of the more mass market boutiques like CyberPC, or alternately buy a low-mid range PC like a Dell Vostro that has a PCIe slot and upgrade the PSU + GPU.

Whichever fit my budget. I've worked with HP, Dell, Lenovo, Compaq, and Gateway computers and everyone of them has had good ones and bad ones. It's almost random chance as to how long any of them will last.

I would buy a Lenovo or Dell built to my specs (order on line). If I had to buy off the shelf, maybe I'd switch to the dark side and get a Mac. 🙂

I'd go with HP or Dell, which ever one is the cheapest at a good/best spec. Don't forget online coupon codes!

I usually go to techbargains.com or bensbargains.net and see what's happening there, if budget is a concern. Quite often you can find killer deals. Saw an i3-2100 with good specs and including a 20" LCD recently for around $400 flat, which is impossible to build with the monitor and legal windows license for that amount of $$.

Its all the same, find the cheapest..

I ran shop with full dell and yeah theres good and bad batches, now i'm in HP shop w/ lenovos, they all fail.. Anything mechanical made in china, taiwan, vietnam, thiland, etc will fail eventually

money no object, puget. they hand select the quietest fans from their stock of quiet fans for their top systems.

First of all, I'm only considering mass produced, "normal" computers. Boutiques are like cheating at this game.

So if I had to buy a prebuilt for my srs biznis, I'd get a Dell Precision. Whatever the biggest and baddest one is at the time.
