If you had to buy a car right now under $9000

For a cheap car in this range, what would you get for reliability, since looks and performance probably wouldn't be an option?

hmmmm quite a few decent cars can be had for under $9000 in Australia

top of the list would be a 1991-92 Nissian Skyline GTS-T R32 type M....the baby GTR...very nice car

plenty of decent late model Ford Falcons can be had for under $9000, especially V8 powered models which have become unpopular because of high fuel prices on Australia, but I would probably buy a good conditon low kay 82-86 Ford Falcon 4.1litre inline 6 (XE or XF model) for around AU$2500 and plonk a $6500 Mike Vine stage 2 Turbo kit on to it.....powers goes from a fair 150hp to a decent 380hp...with better fuel economy and torque than many similar V8's.

Looks are subjective. But you can definitely find a car with good performance under $9000...

For a daily-driver fun car, I'd probably get a 98ish LS1 Trans Am.
For a winter / snow / backup ride, probably some sort of late '90s / early '00s Subaru.
