if you had three empty pci slots...

So I have this ridiculously old pc, 04' I think. And I'm kind of a noob, so I have no idea what to do with em. I know I could add a sound card, but what else? It's an IBM Thinkcentre with an i865g chipset  (p4 2.4ghz). Installed are 2g of ballistix, one obsurdly small hd (soon to be replaced), one floppy, and an 850xt. My psu is a corsair vx450. any ideas?

Just because they're there, it doesn't mean you have to use them :^P

Here's some stuff that can go in though...

TV tuner card
Extra USB ports
SATA RAID card
Slot fan
WiFi card
PCI gfx card

PCI graphics is [usually] a waste of money. PCI USB slots are a waste of a PCI slot since the USB standard allows you to chain 5 USB hubs together (the motherboard itself counts as one), and have a maximum of 127 USB devices per controller. An external USB hub does the same thing as a PCI USB hub, but it doesn't waste a PCI slot.

If your motherboard doesn't support gigabit ethernet, you could get a PCI card for that too and make a good file server. You may need a new router for this, though.

looked into the couple of suggestions that were submitted and decided that aside from a sound card, all others are too expensive or a waste cuz i'll never use. thanks for posting

my choices?

SATA CARD
SATA CARD
and anyother SATA card.

Deck the living hell out of it with hard drives like my NAS.

now you got a good file server. 😀

Video capture card would be an excellent choice.
Then you can move all your VHS tapes to HDD
and then to DVD ... same if your camcorder is an
older version without Firewire ... And if by some chance
your computer does not yet have Firewire, then a combo
USB 2 & Firewire card is always a good choice. Most pcs
now come with on board NIC and almost decent on board
sound. And if you want more drives than the onboard controllers
can handle then a SATA or IDE controller as you prefer.

i'm assuming the first 2 listed are sound cards, and i know what firewire is, but what's the one in the middle. remember, i'm a noob, so i'm not too savvy on all the lingo. thanks for continuing this thread tho. i'm tryin to get the most out of this system. thanks again. oh, and i'm SOO hooked on modding now. almost as much as with my truck. later

X-Fi or Audigy2 are both sound cards.
Gigabit NIC is a gigabit speed Network Interface Card.
TI firewire card is a firewire card based on a Texas Instruments controller chip.

Hehe, putting something in your PCI slots just for the sake of them not being empty anymore is hilarious 😛 It's like filling up your fridge with bottled water just so because it isn't empty anymore 😀

All my PCI slots are empty, with onboard network and sound there is no need for me to put anything in them 😛

no, lack of grammatical skills is hilarious. "just so because?" hehe.

Lol, pointing out spelling errors is hilarious. Sorry for the obvious mistake, english is my second, third, or fourth language, depending on wether you want to put german or french on the second spot or not 🙂 Dutch being my first obviously.

To be less sarcastic, if you don't know what to put in your PCI slots, don't put anything in there.

Just to pick a nit... If you filled your empty fridge with bottled water, it would make it more efficient due to the mass of water acting as a coldsink :^P I agree with your point otherwise though :^)

You sir are the king of the nerds. 😀

Good point anyway though!

I love the forum noobie trolling the mod. It's ok Marc, we love you even if english isn't your first language!

on-topic: only stuff that comes to mind (that hasn't already been repeated ad-nauseum) is cards for legacy devices, like a gameport or parallel port or something. But really, leaving a slot empty doesn't hurt anything. I have 1/7 expansion slots used on my motherboard (graphics card).

Find three cheap 10/100 NICs and hook up a bunch of IP cameras. Use your imagination. You could be the first to broadcast your cat's litterbox to the world ....

Why would I guess someone has probably done this ? 😛

I knew it ... lol
