if you can forget about the need for a train, i too would recommend greece. see athens, corinth, eleusis,
marathon, and few other choice touristy spots, but if you have the dough do try to do some island
hopping. the further away you get from the tourist centers, especially in summer, the better. and
the smaller and less familiar the island the better, always (golden rule).

Considering you're going to Paris and Amsterdam, I'd leave Greece for another trip and go somewhere closer like Spain, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, or the French Riviera.

Bugsey Greece is indeed part of Europe.

First stop: Monte Carlo, time to take a look at it's opulence.
Next: Germany to the city of Nurburg and hit up the Nurburgring in a rental car (but I heard if they see you are a rental car they won't let you on it)
While in Germany visit the BMW, Mercedes, and Porsche museums.
After this: Italy, and visit the Monza raceway and catch a race or two. Then head off to the Ferrari museum.
Finally, go to Great Britain and try to sneak into Prodrive or Ralliart and take pics

Man, so many choices! Spring could still be kind of rainy in the alps, but if you want to risk it, the sheer beauty of that place is so rewarding. I think I've already told you how much the Lauterbrunnen Valley means to me...

See what I mean?

But given the time of year your're going and the number of days you'll have, I suggest Berlin. It's one of the most amazing European cities... has a TON of history associated with it, yet is one of the most progressive cities in Europe. See the Berlin wall (the tiny bit that remains), the Reichstag, Brandenberg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, Wilhelmstraße, Bebelplatz, Potsdamer Platz, Zoo Station, the TV Tower, I could go on and on. Check out these pics.

If you want to see Bavaria, can't go wrong with Munich either... it's quite a contrast to Berlin.

Most Germans know some english but many are reluctant to speak it. Contrast this with Austria, where most people know some english and most are very willing to speak to you in it. Salzburg is a BEAUTIFUL city... one of my favorites. Tons of culture and things to do and see.

I wouldn't try to cram Italy into such a short trip... you will eat up an entire day (or night) on the train just getting there and back (I assume you're using the rail and not flying). Although Italy is definitely worth seeing, save it (and greece and spain) for a different trip.

I can highly recommend Switzerland, Germany, and Austria. Anywhere farther would eat up too much time traveling, IMHO.

Man I'm getting jealous... MUST plan another Europe trip.

<< Prague, Czech Republic. No contest. >>

I've heard Prague is great and fairly cheap too but I haven't been able to get there yet. I'd also recommend Barcelona (it's not that far from southern France) or maybe Brussels (also relatively close to France - about four hours from Paris by bus). Not sure what you want to do but both have great museums and architecture.

Italy, definitely. I was in Europe twice and we started near the top Amsterdam and drove down to Rome both times. By far the most awe inspiring memories I have are from Italy. Florence, Milan, Vatican City, Rome, Venice. See the Sistine Chapel! I want to go back so badly and see the renovation, it's supposed to be amazing.
