I got a friend who has a lot of money to blow on a TV, any suggestions? And also, I should mention that money is pretty much no object for this bastard, so let your imagination run wild.

I spent less than half of that on a Samsung HLS-5087 1080p 50" DLP with 5-year warranty and sent the balance off to INGDirect.

wth is a VPW-VL100? you mean the VPL-VW100? anyway, I would get the pioneer PDP6070 or PDP6071 from best buy for ~$6000.

How big is the room it's going to be in?
Is it going to be a dark room or a light room?
Will he just be using it for TV/Movies, or will he be hooking up a PC or a console to it?

DLP, Plasma, LCD, and front projection all have different strengths.

I wouldn't be stupid enough to spend $6000 on a TV.

That is, unless $6000 is a negligible amount of money to me. But if I have to set a budget of $6000 for the TV, then $6000 is not a negligible amount of money to me. :)

(That is, if I were to spend $6k on a TV, it would be because $6k would get me the TV I want, not because I set a budget of $6k and found a TV within that budget.)

If you want an actual TV and not a projector then I would go with the new DLP that is 8" that you can hang on the wall, or if that doesn't matter just one of the high end DLP's. That will run you around $3k, then like others said spend the rest on sound system, maybe HD-DVD, HD tivo (when it comes out), stuff like that.

edit: oh and also like someone else said get a media PC with network connection and a bunch of TV cards to record stuff.

Sounds like something I'll do in the future...probably a 43" Elite or a 1080p PJ from the next-gen, like the Sony Pearl, etc.
