It's meant to be compared to a 3.2ghz, yes. However, as far as actual gaming performance, an a64 3200 is closer in performance to the p4 3.8ghz (slighlty better actually). You really onlt need to spend around 350. I'd recomend what LiquidSun recomended.

one last question...the amd 3200 , hows the performance when
encoding video and editing ? if its good , i may have
made up my mind !

Chip: Athlon64 3800+ (Rev E Venice core) and run it at 2.8ghz (12 multiplier and 234mhz). I wouldn't get a 3200+ I haven't heard of anyone having problems getting a 3800+ up to 2.8ghz, however I've heard a few stories of the Venice core 3200+ not always reaching 2.8ghz for some reason. I've heard alot of people get capped in the 2.5-2.6ghz range.

Board: DFI Lanparty nF4 Ultra-D (or SLI version if you want)

just run a good heatsink like the Thermalright XP-120 and a good panaflo 120mm fan (115cfm@43dba) with some AS5 goop

The only problem that huge (best air cooling heatsink) has with this mainboard is that the heatpipes will slightly cover the first PCI-e slot (the pci-e 4x slot, the small one).....and the other end of the heatsink will be covering dimm slot 4. So just make sure you're using regular sized dimms, not the big ones like the Corsair ones with the cheesy LED's

OoOoOo, i go to a lanparty to show everyone how pretty my machine is.

If you're going to spend that much, especially since you mentioned overclocking, you need to look at a San Diego A64. Look around in the overclocker forum to see how good they are.

A64 3700+ San Diego: $349

EPoX NF4 Ultra board: $112

And if you're going to overclock, you'll want a good heatsink. Here's the quietest Zalman. No need to get the heavier all-copper one that doesn't cool better, or the ridiculously huge 7700 which is louder and doesn't exactly help much.

Use the extra money in your budget to add more ram than you planned for.

If there's one thing almost everyone needs, it's more RAM. 😛

Amen to that! Even though my system is hardly state of the art, more like entry level (p4p800 Deluxe, P4 3.0ghz prescott, ATI9800 pro) the 2 gigs of dual channel ram I have makes my system rock. Plays every new game very well, even in higher settings. I wont upgrade my chip or mobo or video card until I come across a game my system can't handle.

I'd recommend the DFI Lanparty and the XP90 or XP120 if yoiu're really intrested in overclocking

Eh? You MIGHT be better off goign with a Pentium 4 640 or a 630. Depite what people say, the 6XX series run a lot cooler than the dreaded 5XX overheating series. To be honest with you, look around - temps aren't much higher than an AMD Athlon64.

The reaosn I recommend this is becuase you mentioned video editing - intels have a large edge on video/multimedia encoding. However, it's all up to you. As a programmer and 3D Designer, I chose the Pentium 4 .... but if I was a hardcore gamer I would have chosen the A64.

Yes the 6 series runs a lot cooler than the 5 series.

Anyways, I'd get the 3700 San diego and DFI NF4.

Please note the DFI is an overclockers board and is picky about memory.

ESPECIALLY CORSIAR VALUE SELECT!

If you want, pick up a 3500+ and some good TCCD or UTT memory.

You're probably right, although I'm running a DFI LanParty UT 250Gb and the thing annoys me. Has all kinds of dumb little bugs, and whenever I bump the HTT over 220 it seems to think I turned on the IDE RAID and reboots as soon as it posts, no matter what BIOS or settings I use.

Venice 3000 $150, DFI NF4 $130 = $220 cash in my pocket and one of the best setups around.
