If you had $50,000 budget for a pc...

I bought a 37" westinghouse 1080P LCD as a computer monitor for about $900... really can't spend too much money on an LCD because 37" is about as big as you can get before the monitor is 'too big' to see anything. Hell, i think you'd have trouble spending $10k on a PC... You'd probably have to make some kind of gold plated, diamond encrusted case to spend all 50k 😛

$2000 laptop and $1500 PC with all my necessary software. Spending anymore than that for my purposes would be pointless, since it'll be outdated with a year anyway. My current expenditure is probably $100/yr for my PC, so I don't need much. The rest of the money can be used for something more worth the price.

If everything had to go toward computer-related items, I'd get some servers and a fast link to host my own website.

Just read in the paper about the gamer addicted parents who had starved their kids due to not having the time to feed them (22 m.o. boy and 11 m.o. girl - the girl weighed 10 lbs). The 25 y.o. father had received a 50k inheritance and splurged on PC hardware and a large screen plasma TV.
Maybe he could have bought decent laptops and they could have fed the kids while playing the damn game.

PC Magazine tried to spend 50k on a single PC a few years ago (2001 I think). They cheated by gold plating stuff like mad (they even gold plated the keyboard and mouse and fixed it so the keys/buttons would work with the added weight). They also bought a 10k speaker system to hook it up to which is semi-cheating.

Four or six $4,000 high end gaming computers, a new long desk, and a gigabit switch. Gaming for my friends!

The rest of the money would go into savings or a new skyline GTR.

I'd buy some new memory and a flat panel for my current computer and use the rest for paying off my school loans and house.

That is only if you restrict yourself to a desk 🙂

I got rid of my desk and just have a keyboard/mouse stand about 6' away and its pretty rad. 🙂

50K isn't much if you start looking at HP Superdomes or high end IBM machines. Hell, you just about gotta pay HP 50K to even get a freakin price quote (took me 3 weeks, working from INSIDE HP)

Edit: Just to throw this out, it was 10 year warranty, same day onsite. 32 Proc, 64 GB memory, don't remember disk config stuff. Had Windows Datacenter Edition 2003 included with it. That is the ONE OS you cannot buy (datacenter edition) or get from MS with your MSDN. It HAS to be purchased from an OEM. I think our end config, including on site setup and training came in around 250K

Does it HAVE to be a PC? And for personal use? 😕

If so, I'm going to find some way to invest that money.. 50k for a personal pc is ridiculous. Heck, anything > 2k would be ridiculous. 😛

Primary Machine:
8-core 3ghz Mac Pro
32gb ram
6 terabyte drives in RAID 5 (5tb usable)
DVD burner with LightScribe
Dual Quadro cards
3 x 30" Dell LCD monitors

Network:
12 terabyte file server in RAID 6 (10tb usable)
Gigabit Ethernet
3 802.11n routers to cover all areas of house

Render node:
8-core 3ghz Mac Pro
32gb ram
4 terabyte drives in RAID 5 (3tb usuable)

I think that's only about 20k...I guess I'd use the rest to buy a blue Mazda RX-8 and put a kickin' carputer in it 😀

Build a massively redundant server and start a small time hosting business. 105

I never thought i'd say this...

...I'd put 2k towards a computer and put the rest in the bank.

I'm getting old 🙁

Id get 2 servers and throw them in a colo and host gaming servers at a relativley cheap cost and build up my name and then start charging a little more and hope to have made a good cash cow 🙂

I'd buy a pocket calculator, calculate my odds, and go/or not go to vegas...

Honestly I would probably just buy a macbook pro, fix my noow-defunct server, and use the rest to pay my loans off🙂

Wouldn't you still need to buy some kind of insane pipeline to be able to host all that stuff? I imagine the setup for that would be ginormous :Q

Yea, you would. Thanks for bursting my $50,000 server bubble. 🙁 110

Why the 105?

Since this is just an exercise, I don't think we have to be so prudent with our fake money... 😛

Whatever I did buy would have a large SAS array and as many 30" LCDs as I could hook up to it. It would be dual quad-core most likely. If I can buy software, I'd have to get a copy of ArcGIS since I work with it. That would cut the money for the computer down nicely.
