i would save my money, save more, and get a better one. increase your budget by $200. and by then, you can get a good camera.

Actually... on second thought, if this is gonna be your second camera, minuswell make it good. If it was a first I'd recommend an A70 to get you started or something. But if it's your second, minuswell get something real good.

So yeah, I'd recommend saving up.

Minuswell? MINUSWELL?? WTF is minuswell?!? Is that some kind of obscure mathematical theory that only you are privy to?

Perhaps you are thinking of "might as well" seeing as how that would be proper English and would fit with the rest of what you were saying.

This is over your budget, I just the S400 today and its great.

I wanted to get something smaller, I had a Fuji S6900 before that its probably one of the best cameras out there, but t was to big for my everyday use.

Save up for a Sony F717? A70 isn't that much of a step over your S300. In any case, you should save up. I hear Olympus cameras are excellent, and you never know when the 10X optical zoom might come in handy. 😎

from the reviews I read, the A70 seems to have a 'soft image' issue. Don't know what this is but may be a show stopper. It does not have serial input, which means if your comp doesn't take USB then you're screwed.
Also, why only 3x zoom? I would like to see all digital cams have a min requirement of 5x or 10x zoom.
The A70 does seem to be everybodys fav though. I'm actually looking for a dig cam myself in the same range and A70 is near the top of list. let me know which one you choose.

TranceNation - I would also consider the Olympus C-720 but it costs around $100 more but it has incredible optical zoom!

Dammit! all this talk of Digital cams has got me wanting one. I was going to hold off, and not buy one, but you guys and your peer pressure!!!?!?! DAMN YOU ALL!

🙁 I'm thinking of getting the A70 myself....I would like a more powerful optical zoom though...

Well the A70 has a lense adapter so you can put on your favorite 75mm-300mm lense that costs more than the camera itself

canon a70 plus, canon powershot case, plus 6-1 in internal card reader, plus 256mg card....that should be about $300 if you can find the right deal.

The A70 is definately the best camera for under $300. You could probably get a used G2 or an S45 for only $100 more, however.

RossMan,
I checked out the reviews on the Olympus C-720, bottom line is that even though it has 8-10x optical zoom, the image quality is very bad and it's very difficult to get the correct picture at the correct lighting settings, either it'll be too dark or too bright, ie, you constantly have to adjust the camera for this which is what I consider a very big show stopper. I have an Olympus D-460Z 1.3 megapixel and it's ok. For some reason I get spots when I take night shots.
