If you had 300-400k to invest, where would it go??

400K is not enough to split it among all those things, may rental and something liquid.

Two nice houses and a nice car. Rent one house out, live in the other, drive the car while maintaining a regular job.

Regular job + rented house = Decent Income. I have a place to live, and a car to drive.

EDIT: Or try to start up my own franchise business (Auntie Annes, McD, etc)

There is no one answer for everyone. Personally I would go with some longer term investments. I'd definitly look into buying some land, but I wouldn't put it all in there. I'd want to keep some more liquid, lower risk.

There was a new mall being built in our area and the land owner offered 4 and half acres for 40k.
That would have generated it's own income most definitely, but my dad did not fall in 🙁

Buy a house and leverage it for more houses in university areas. Finish the basements off, and make it so there are 6 rooms, 3 per floor (on a raised bungalow at least). Rent out 6 rooms in each home for $425 CAN to students. Do this with a few homes. 🙂

Exactly what I was going to post. Smart man.

Is there any particular reason you'd buy a house and convert it instead of just buying an apartment building with as many units?

I think he just said Invest, now how would you spend it, that's two different things.

If you're looking for pure investment, a car is a TERRIBLE idea.

House/Property as everyone else is suggesting.

I'd buy a nice condo on the top floor of a high rise here in Ann Arbor, and rent it out to rich students for $3000/mo...or rather, their parents. 🙂

Where, how?

Invest for what? Long term growth (e.g. how soon do I need that money back) or on going cash flow (e.g. is that 400k all I have and I need to live off of it from this day forward?)

this is the winnar.

I would invest half of it in glorious mutual funds and take the other half over to my friend Asadulah who works in securities and...

Buy into a franchise and open the first store...or buy out the ownership of someone else that wants out of a franchise.
