You have been communicating with HR through email who gave you the bad news. Or is it better to not bring attention to yourself since you got rejected from another position and just submit an online app online? I landed the interview the first time by just applying through an online app.

How big is the company? If it is 200 people or less they would've called you if they thought you were a good fit

Talk to your HR contact in that company and tell them you are interested in the other position. HR will let you know if you need to apply online again.

Maybe you did not fit with the first team but it is possible you may fit with the next.

It couldn't hurt. At my current job they rejected me for an internship I applied for. When I graduated I landed the full time gig though. Sometimes they aren't feeding you bullshit when they tell you were "next on the list" but simply didn't have a spot at the time.

I'd say it is a judgment call. If you felt like you nailed the interview and had really good rapport, it could be a plus. If you aren't too sure how it went, I'd avoid mentioning it--there could be something negative the hiring manager or someone else came away with, that will get you snubbed before you get a second chance.

On the whole I'd advise against it--someone who is rejected is instinctively seen as less valuable. You're telling them you're a reject, when what you want is an air of being a commodity that multiple companies are after.

edit: actually re-read the OP. Depends on your rapport with the HR person, and if you think he/she is working that position. It might seem silly, if you've talked or met with him/her, to send a resume through the system

If you're on speaking terms with the HR person, it can only help to let them know you're interested and qualified for the other position. It's all part of networking. Keep your chin up OP, I went through a year of unemployment and quite a few interviews before I finally got a job earlier this month. Just remember, if you're good enough, it's not a question of if, it's a question of when.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I submitted my app but I held off on writing an email to the HR person. I am going to give it a 1-2 week then reach out to make sure I'm on their radar. If nothing happens after that, I know that they aren't interested.

I wish there were more jobs being posted. I see the same jobs everyday so I'm looking at jobs I hadn't even considered or had interest in.

If you don't make it through an initial screening it is unlikely that changing position choices will do you any good.

I used to help hire for a retailer, and if we liked someone in a different position we would usually tell them. Usually the interviewers are in tune with this.

Do you already work at this company? And, is the new/second position in the same group/department as the first?

I handling the hiring logistics for my department (job reqs, screen resumes, schedule interviews, interview, etc) in a big company, and we don't see any resumes unless they are sent to us by the system, or emailed to us by a friend/colleague/parent/whatever.

So, I would apply for the second position and not even mention it to the HR person unless you're sure its through them (it might not even be the same HR person depending on the size of the company).

Anyway, its rough out there for candidates, so its not unusual to see the same person apply for several jobs - I don't particularly care as long as they are qualified. The college kid who's previous experience was working at Quiznos applying for 8 different Sr. Chief Engineer positions has me roll my eyes and disregard them.

Well I have had way more luck responding back to rejection emails than I have for actually just random applying at place. 23420981231 applications and the job that I got was from the one I actually emailed back to HR after being rejected.

Email the HR person. If you didn't get the job because they liked you and another candidate but the other person better, or you were just not QUITE the fit they wanted but you are in the new job, this could be great for you.

Unless you really pissed off the HR person and they have a good reason to tell a colleague that you suck, the worst that could happen is that they don't mention it to their colleague, the likelihood is that they'll at least mention you applied and your application gets a for-sure review, and the best that could happen is that you get a glowing review.

Applying online puts you in a queue with hundreds of others, almost anything that gets someone's notice on you out of that queue works to your benefit.

But do note, only follow up once. Following up repeatedly gets you the reputation of the annoying guy who doesn't understand that corporate professionals are busy and they will get back in touch if they have something to tell you.
