me and a roommate was walking home from the subway last night, he found cash on the ground, two $100's and a $20 bill. he quickly grabbed it, stuffed it in his pocket and kept walking. when we got home we examined it and it's real.

i saw it too, but i was too slow to react. would you guys have kept it?

edit: gf said she'd donate to a church

No envelope, no clip, no wallet, no way of identifying anybody, keep it. $220 is still along the lines of pocket money, not to the level of "Oh shit I lost the rent" money. If you find $5k in hundreds in an envelope, then it's a different story, as you know someone will be missing it.

Cash? It would be near impossible to determine who dropped it or how long it had been there. I'd keep it.

Credit cards or other identifiable items I would make every effort to return. But unless I saw it drop out of a guy's pocket I don't know how I'd get the cash back to the owner.

I don't believe in the rule "finders keepers, losers weepers"

I know if I lost 220 bucks I'd go hunting for it in hopes of finding it again

If I found that amount of money somewhere, I'd leave it be, in hopes that if that ever happened to me, someone else would return the favor.

Honestly, I'd leave it. Not that I wouldn't think of keeping it. Give it to the cops, and they'll just have a really nice steak night tomorrow.

I would ignore it because I was caught by several Federal agents in a sting for picking up a $50 dollar bill.

There's really no way to return it to the owner so keep it. If it's just cash on the ground then grab it real quick and quickly put it in your pocket. This whole move should take no longer than 2 seconds, and keep walking acting like nothing happened.

Agreed. If you ask people around you then some random guy has the chance to claim it's his when you have no clue if it is or not. You could donate it, or use it to do something nice for somebody. Take your girl out for a nice night.

I remember reading an article that NYPD sets up sting operations in the subway. An undercover cop will "drop" their wallet in plain view, and the other hidden officers will wait to see if anyone trys to run off with it. If they do, then the officers move in and make an arrest.

I don't know if they would try that with cash though.

If you are thinking about donating it to a church you might as well wipe your ass with it.

Ask around and then keep.

Fuck donating to churches. If you REALLY want to donate, go find a homeless shelter and give it to the first guy that shows an act of kindness.
