I didn't have a N64, but have played the game and kinda got into it. However, the Mario 64 version for the DS got old VERY fast and the controls made it painful to play sometimes.

Well playing it now for the first time and playing it back in 96 for the first time were 2 very different things ...

Mario 64 was great for its time. Its not aged as well as Zelda though, due to the horrific camera/controls.

And SMW2: Yoshi's Island is still the best mario game by a mile. New SMB has NOTHING on it.

:Q

that game didn't even deserve the "Super Mario World" title in it's alias. it was a good game but no where NEAR as good as any other super mario game, not to mention I beat it in 2 days.

You're insane. It was the best Mario on SNES for sure, tough to call against Mario 64 though.

Yoshi's Island is above and beyond any other platformer on the face of the planet. It's just so beautiful.

Wow I'm shocked at all the people WHO KNOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT MARIO IN THIS THREAD!!!!

How can you even call it a mario game when you play as Yoshi the entire time and shoot eggs at people??

Other than being a platformer and 2d sidescrolling it is not even Mario'ish.

<--- walks away in disgust.

Super Mario 3 or SMW should have been in 3D like Mario 64, then it would have been awesome...

mario 64 was annoying in that if you walked a little bit up a hill you weren't supposed to, you'd suddenly lose your footing and be imparted with a tremendous amount of kinetic energy, sending you far back down.

Mario Kart 64 is TERRIBLE ... but that's for another discussion.

I mean how the hell can you take away the jump/slide, which is the basis for perfecting turns in the game, and take the game seriously? Mario Kart 64 was completely made for people who suck at games to make them feel like they were good.

the best mario kart game is mario kart DS hands down. it includes maps from the earlier games for nostalgia sake, and has a few maps of its own, GREAT multiplayer and online features. BEST BEST kart game ever in time, world, galaxy, universe, dimensions, etc.

Mario Kart on the GBA is better than the DS one. It incorporates the jumping and not the stupid slide/speedburst thing that they incorporated into the N64 version.

The DS one is better than the N64 one, but the DS, N64, and Cube ones are all way inferior to the SNES one :D

Lets see. Mario in the title. Sequel to a Mario game. Mario rides on Yoshi, as he has in other Mario games. Cast of characters also similar to other Mario games. Platform jumping, collect coins, 8 worlds etc. How is it NOT a mario game?

It is still one of the finest games ever made. It excelled in every area, and is still as playable as it ever was.

I can't say the same for Mario 64. I can still enjoy just about any other Mario game but that one.

SMW2: Yoshi's Island is probably the easiest game I've ever owned. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's a little kids game. I beat the game in a day and didn't die once....in fact I didn't even come close.

The fun and challenge is in getting 100% on every level. Thats harder than you think. Just rushing through the game, you're missing what made it so damn good.

Not really. I did get 100% on every level. That took an extra couple of days.

Mario64 is one of the best 3D platformers ever. I never had issues with the controls outside of the camera, but even that didn't "bother" me. The only time the camera was an issue was in tight spaces. Most of the levels were wide open, so panning around and zooming in wasn't really a pain. Dunno what's wrong with the rest of you. :p

Oh, and I can't wait for Mario Galaxy. Rumor has it we will see an Oct/Nov release. Woot!

At the time Mario 64 was released, it was incredible. I still think it's a very good game, nice puzzles and environments, good level design and art.

I agree with the OP. This game was phenomenal. If you don't like it you have a chemical imbalance in your brain.

Yoshi's Island is not a Mario game, it's a platformer set in the Mario universe. It's a very good platformer, but it has some very distinctive elements that are lacking from a Mario game(and some other elements it has that Mario games don't). As for Mario 64, it's utter tripe.

Mario 64 was great, sad thing was the boss battles we're horrible. All incredibly easy. The gameplay was some of the best ever though. It's probably not in my top 5 favorite Mario games, but it's a great one for sure.

I hate all types of video games. Even if it promoted safety and was educational.

My name is Jack Thompson BTW.
