Or how about don't be an idiot and don't open crap that comes in an email attachement!

But I'm on Linux now. If I was on windows 10 it would be on an air gapped computer and only used for stuff that requires it. I disabled updates for 7 too though when I heard about the issues. I only use that machine for gaming though.

<stream of expletives> Windows 10 <stream of expletives> doesn't <stream of expletives> allow me to <stream of expletives> select default programs from the <stream of expletives> hard drive unless it <stream of expletives> finds the program first. The <stream of expletives> choices are the <stream of expletives> wrong program or <stream of expletives> go to <stream of expletives> the <stream of expletives><stream of expletives><stream of expletives><stream of expletives><stream of expletives><stream of expletives><stream of expletives><stream of expletives><stream of expletives><stream of expletives> app store. <stream of expletives>

Case in point: .mts files open and play well with VLC. Win 10 offers me the choice of a program that can't play .mts files or searching the app store. That's it. Win 10 won't even allow me to associate .ppt files with freaking PowerPoint 16. It's a fripping MS product fer like whoever's sake.

Edit: Okay, so I can do it file type by file type in Win Explorer but can't do it in settings >> apps >> defaults where Win 10 keeps telling me to go. Piss me off.

Ewww I always forget how ugly win10 looks. Some basic 1 pixel borders in some key areas to section off different UI elements and a color other than pure white could go a long way.

That's Win Explorer as I mentioned in my post. Under Setting, where Win 10 directs the user to select default apps, you get this:

Win10sucksdogsballs01.png

Win10sucksdogsballs02.png

and if you click the store link, it takes you to the store. No option to look on your computer.

So use the old control panel settings then...

A bigger question is "Why are you using OpenOffice?". That project is all but dead. LibreOffice is where the cool kids are these days.

I wanna know what morons out there were dumb enough to make an internet facing system with file and print sharing (SMB) turned on.

The same ones that still use Windows XP, I guess.

I haven't gotten around to uninstalling it after trying it out. I use Office 16 as it was almost free (but still prisonware, I suppose). My only exposure to LibreOffice was with the libre version of PowerPoint which, despite the protestations of the guy running the projector at the meeting, is not 100% compatible with PowerPoint. My presentation ran fine but another presenter got hosed as the libre version mangled his fancy slide transitions. I hate fancy slide transitions but I felt for the guy, almost. I say "almost" because he used a bunch of text slides as well as fancy transitions and I hate text slides more than I hate fancy transitions. The use of text slides tells me a person doesn't know how to give a talk.

For the record, the malware in question (and a lot of malware nowadays) can be delivered remotely with zero action on your part if you have an internet-connected workstation. This obviously won't work behind a NAT or something (unless you've got a pertinent port forwarded) but 'i'm smart with my computer' is not a universal defense anymore.

A directly-connected unpatched Windows (any version) box probably has an uninfected lifespan measurable in tens of minutes.

Makes me laugh every time my internet drops and the tech tells me to plug my workstation directly into the wall (in front of my NAT), as though I feel like reimaging my computer every time TWC shits itself.

I'd say the first step in "being smart" would be to not have a workstation connected directly to the internet. :p

I can't believe people even do that at all now days, most ISPs will only allow you to pull 1 IP anyway, so you kinda NEED a NAT router.

I remember when I was a kid before ADSL came out and it was just dialup, and most people only had one computer so no router. I would port scan entire ranges for fun and find so much stuff, it was kinda cool. I would mess around with sub7 and stuff.

They probably throw you in jail for 35 years now days for doing that.

You'd be dismayed at the number of systems directly connected. In addition, remember that this can spread from within a given network if one gets infected, so say, via wifi or a campus style network. Then you've got the 'smart ones' connecting to an otherwise unprotected VPN pool, onion system, or phone tether 'for protection' exposing themselves to whatever might be port scanning on that side of the connection.

Stupid "default allow" behavior that MS and many other companies have implemented for decades because it's more 'user friendly'. Derp.

My understanding is that, while outward facing SMB is vulnerable, the bigger issue is getting someone to click on a link infecting their computer and then spreading to internal only SMB shares

All of our computers at work in our department are ok. I updated/patched my computers at home every week.

Words on the streets are more attacks like this are coming soon. Not if but when.

apparently im a god as i haven't had an issue with a windows update ever

haven't gotten a virus since my freshmen year of college (2000) and that was because of shitty college networking practices and someone else infected computer doing very bad things

Ah...the battlecry of the arrogant IT guy:

"I WANT TO CHOOSE WHEN UPDATES GET INSTALLED AND WHICH ONES I INSTALL!!!"
*Forgets to install updates for months at a time*
And then there are those that run updates using the option above and doesn't forget, but then M$ breaks update and updates never get checked and or cannot be installed. I had this happen on Windows 7 and 8.1 (just fixed the 8.1). So, it isn't all about forgetting, it is about M$ breaking their own system.

I'd say your router its self now a days is more susceptible. I can't tell you how many infected routers I see from a wide range of ISPs from all around the world try to break into my Wordpress site. Then these poor people that don't update their router firmware wonder why their Internet speed is so sub par.

Win 10 broke homegroup. :(

File transfers between machines via homegroup are super slow. I read that disabling WMM QoS in the router would help but it didn't. I'll have to keep digging.

How are these being hacked? I'm kinda curious, as there's not really any attack vector I can think of unless you do something retarded like put the admin interface on the outside.
