2 things:

1) A "Hide Thread" button. When clicked, you have to go to your "Hidden Threads" view to see it. That way you can just hide some of the worst, lingering threads that seem to always remain up near the top and just won't die.

2) An "Ignore User" option. Anything that user posted from then on would just show as a small line in the thread saying "You have this user set to Ignore. To see this post click here."

I'm not putting these out as "hide my eyes from the meanies" options, but rather as tools to filter your own forum view. i.e. if you really can't stand YAGTs, just "Hide Thread" on 'em and pow - cleaner looking first page of OT.

Those, and a cookie icon. 🙂

Do away with post counts and have a MASSIVE sticky thread with answers to commonly asked questions about digicams, laptops, web hosting, YAGT, cars, PDAs, appliances, Atkins diets, etc.
 
Limiting quotes embedded within quotes to a maximum of 3 or 4 levels would help.

I don't know how difficult this would be to implement, but it would be fun to have a user rating system that is reset each month, and instead of only being able to pick a number from 1 to 10, the system should have some more interesting options, such as "nefmaster", "super troll", "crabby old geezer", "über-nerd" etc. ("lurker" would be the default value). The monthly "evaluation" would appear under one's user name.
 
One permanent stickied topic for each of the most common flame wars.....all other threads on these topics immediately nuked by the mods.

- Ricers suck/No they don't

- Homosexuality

- Abortion

- Republicans vs. Democrats

I'm sure I forgot a few, but you get the idea.
