If I had the choice I would love the ability to have morph myself into the Xenomorphs in Aliens.

Thats political aptitude and I seem to be the only person who's voted for it.

I'm thinking you guys don't realize that this attribute has nothing to do with government. It has to do with interacting and working well with others. Good negotiating skills. In the current world, there isn't a more important skill.

so you'd take charistmatic politicians over competent ones? i'd gladly take 535 engineers over 535 supposedly-charismatic-do-nothings.

Math has the power to make great changes and can fulfill his/her life more than any other "gift" IMO.

First, we should establish that most science is just applied math. If you are a great mathematician it is likely you can be a great scientist (Hilbert, von Neumann, Gödel are great examples).

Look at the major advancements in civilization--they stem from some branch of math. So if the child should be part of advancing civilization and/or wants a legacy then it is math that matters.

Furthermore if they want to enjoy their own life they can do so with math. Mathematicians and scientists can invent tremendous applications of their trade and get rich off them. It just so happens that, unfortunately, most scientists and mathematicians aren't that entrepreneurial (read Larry Page's latest commentary on Science needing more entrepreneurs.)

Google is a perfect example. Two very bright students using math to develop a new algorithm that changes the way people search for data. They patent their PageRank algorithm and become multi-billionaires with Eric Schmidt (combined worth of like 30 billion or thereabouts).

Thats why I vote for math: potential to have a great impact on humanity, leave a legacy, and make filthy loads of money to enjoy their life. Also it is most important to note that the fulfillment from mathematics is unlike anything else.

I agree. And I'd rather be someone (and have my child be someone) who makes useful contributions to society, not an incompetent who gets by on charisma.

Exactly what i had intended.

Just because our current political figures are riddled with wrong-doers, doesn't mean you cant wish the aptitude on your child. We're lead by politicians (in gov't and in business), if you have offspring with an aptitude towards politics (interpreted as social/leadership skills and the ability to sway arguments) an honorable politician could be great! They could lead this country to greatness! :)

Any of the traits i offered could be used for bad - scientist could create a horrible weapon, literary person could write something powerfully evil, entertainer could motivate people to like a new demeaning form of entertainment.... etc

How so? Can you expand on that? (I'm interested, not challenging you)

When was charisma and competence made mutually exclusive? Did you even read the original post? We're not picking the only trait or ability a person has. We're picking their gift. Most people don't even have a "gift"...

They're not mutually exclusive, I was just using extremes to illustrate that I consider one gift to be more valuable than the other, even if it may not lead to wealth.

Think along the lines of - anarchist cookbook, or a piece that would ignite national/international turmoil, or a writing so universally dividing among the people that it separates the country. I can't give you a specific example b/c i'm not that smart, but if you will.... what if a litterary genius on shakespears level were to write a paper that shook the moral or political or ??? foundations of our society/planet.

I intended the gifts to be a gift - blind of how it will be used.

but if you'd like to think about it..... (as it applies to tho this thread)

Mozart, Bach, etc had the gift of entertainment
Wright brothers, Freud, Alexander Fleming (found penecillin) Science
George Washington, Hitler, Winston Churchill, Martin Luthor king had the gift of politics
Lance armstrong, Michael Jordon, Mohammed Ali Sports
Isaac Newton, Archimedes, Einstein Math

I'll never have children (hopefully :p ) so not applicable. Just for the sake of voting I picked math. Math lets us understand the universe, and math geeks tend to naturally gravitate toward computational sciences like programming, finance, and physics anyways.
