Ok. Here's a question for you history buffs:

Who was the best man who never ran for President who would have made one of the greatest Presidents?

I have someone in mind, but I can also think of about 5 other people.

Taft was hardly the worst President, and by a long shot. As Republicans go he was very liberal. Of course, his sheparding of the income tax amendment might have some of you Libertarians voting agin' him. :) And, if I recall correctly, wasn't that one of Teddy Roosevelt's big ideas? :)

As much as I hate LBJ he had so many good accomplishments I'd be loathe to name him the worst.

My vote would be for Garfield with Arthur in second place.

The best President? James Madison with Lincoln second, IMHO.

-Robert

Lincoln second best? I guess I have to question your political intelligence. You're a vocal Bush critic, yet Lincoln has one of the worst constitutional records of ANY president. Do a little research, basic freedoms were trampled, he essentially instituted martial law.

That they did, Lincoln provoked it as well by refusing to remove the the troops from the garrison when requested to do so.

He really should have removed the troops.

Maybe that had something to do with them not being allowed to secede?

No, read Lincoln's own writings. He had no intention of letting the states leave. He was going to try to keep it together at all costs even it came to war.

George Mason. I also like Ron Paul.

How about best man who ran but never won? I would have liked to have seen what Perot would have done, for better or worse.

Reagan. More than anyone else--Reagan (and his minions--many of them still active in this current administration), has been core-responsible for the problems we face today.

Carter's administration was ignorant about quite a few things--but it was ernest.

Flawed, and perhaps criminaly so--but ernest.

The fact is Carter has--to this day--done the most to secure peace in the middle-east than any other administration.

Reagan wasted everything gained towards peace--simply walked away.

Train:

No, McArthur would have made a horrible President. He wanted to be EMPEROR. :) Actually, he already thought he was EMPORER, which is why he had so much trouble with Marshall and Truman.

cKG:

George Mason wasn't on my list but he is an interesting candidate. I'd have to think some about that. He does have a highway named after him, which is a start. :)

Anti:

Well, yes, and no. Lincoln was the right man for the times and they were very difficult times. I'd have to hijack this thread more so than I have already done to explain my views. But, after Lincoln I'd put FDR, then Wilson, then Truman, then Jefferson. So, now you really think I'm crazy. :)

No, the fellow I'm thinking of goes back a long way....You might say he had a duel personality. :)

Exactly.

Chess, you're looking for Aaron Burr. I disagree. I think he was too emotional. Ben Franknin cones to mind, though. But he was too busy doing better things.

Carter was ignorant? Carter was hip deep in it.

What history have you been reading? Who do you think pissed off the Iranians by supporting the Shah and giving him sanctuary, after he was dethroned, prompting the hostage crisis? Who do you think laid the ground work to supply Saddam with the means to start a war with Iran?

It wasn't Reagan. Carter laid all that groundwork. All Reagan had to do was walk into office and sign the papers to go through with it.

Carter should be enemy #1 as far as the Middle East is concerned.

That's one hell of a history revision you have going there.

This is an easy one: I'd eliminate Franklin Delano Roosevelt. With his "New Deal" Socialization of the government he single handedly created the Welfare State and an "Entitlement" mentality that had never existed in America before that. He also saddled us with the nightmare of Socialist Security. Those two programs alone cost us nearly one TRILLION dollars every single year.

Definitely, kill Roosevelt.

Hmm - I never considered Hamilton because he was more interested in being a behind-the-scenes guy. He never wanted to be president, did he?. Also, I'm not so sure about his ideas re the strong central bank. But then, maybe he was thinking globally ahead of his time.

Well, to be fair, ALL the states had a choice and could have refused to ratify it. If just a hair more than a THIRD had refused it would have fallen by the wayside (as it should have).

So it's not ENTIRELY Taft's doing :)
