3. Ahh, the bell curve - the ladder is never crowded at the top. Correct. And, getting to that top is as much luck as it is anything else.

4. I saved this one for last.. You are completely ignorant about the schools in this country. This *is* one of the areas that I am quite familiar with through extensive research. (grad projects, etc.) Yes, top students at a top school will be top students anywhere. You think they're getting into Harvard??! Yale? Any Ivy league school??! That's pretty laughable.

A glaring error that you have made is the assumption that the top students at a high performing school are soooo much smarter than the top students at one of the worst performing schools. I'd like to know who these "educational experts" are that you seem to be quoting. So... nearly 100% of all students at the top schools wind up going to college (generally, 100% are more than capable of getting into decent colleges), yet only a fraction of students at the low performing schools have a chance to get into anything other than a mediocre community college. Why's that?

You really really have no idea how bad it is in some of the lowest performing schools... How about - 2 students are born with identical ability. One has a mom and dad, both of whom have high paying jobs. Jr. gets to go to the expensive preschool, because mom and dad know the importance of a good early education. Child #2 is staying home when he's 6 years old to watch the baby while crack-head mom (no Dad) goes out to see if she can score some rocks. (or whatever they call it.) Uhhh, yeah. That kid definitely deserves to live in poverty.

2. Middle class is classified as the middle 25% - 75% in income or net worth. One million in net worth puts you far above the "middle."

3. If you think it's luck, you obviously have never tried to get there. Most people get there with hard work, not luck.

4. If you think a significant portion of kids in bad schools have parents who are "crack mothers" you're clueless. Yes it happens, and it happens a lot, but a majority? I don't think so. Maybe 10% in the WORST OF THE WORST neighborhoods.

I'm sure DrPizza can come up with his own response, but I felt like responding too since this answer is so blatently ovbious.

2. Agreed

3. Semi Agreed. Most of the wealthy people I know are very hard workers, however, some degree of luck is required. Be it good luck / bad luck with certain investments, or just getting lucky with timing on oportunities. It's clearly not JUST luck, but luck does play a part.

4. Crack mother was likely just his example. I know for a fact a significant portion of kids in bad schools have a single parent who works multiple jobs and can't often help them with their homework/studies. Also, many of the parents who have kids in bad schools are illiterate. Obviously the parents should have been better prepared to have kids, but it's not the kid's fault that their parents weren't prepared.

Since the unemployment is low in some socialist countries, it's not because they're socialists the unemployment is high, but because they don't have the guts to make the reforms to improve their competition power, which the scandinavian countries have.

Global Competitiveness Country Rankings 2005-2006:

1. Finland
2. USA
3. Sweden
4. Denmark

5. Taiwan
6. Singapore
7. Iceland
8. Switzerland
9.Norway
10.Australia
11.Netherlands
12.Japan
13.United Kingdom
14.Canada
15.Germany
16. New Zealand

(4 socialist countries in Top 10)

Read about their politics. They are in civil unrest because they are importing thousands of poor immigrants and paying them welfare services. The hard workers of those countries are furious.

The illegal immigrants don't get any welfare since they're illegal, and the legal aren't being "imported" but they seek to live in Europe (Just as they do in US) and that gives som problems regarding welfare payment vs. work encouraging. And don't forget that there have been unrest in US as well (Rodney King)

Do you want to own a business in a country where unions and labor laws are king?
It works, and since most of the population are labor they seem to like it. But actually there has just been a Human Rights decision where you now are allowed to choose which union you will join, no matte which work you have, so it has been vastly liberated. Also those working for unions know about global competition, as you can see in the previous chart.

Do you want to live in a country where "big daddy government" tells you how to live your life?
They don't, but I guess since we're a more crowded continent you need some laws to ensure that the next generations also can have a nice place to live.

I think maybe Italy, Greece or Spain for the weather

maybe I could live in a rural village, and grow my own vegetables, raise some chickens and sheep, etc
