Wait, wait, wait. I don't have to spend $60 I can just replicate it. I have been assured by the estate that the replication is 100 percent of the authentic wine. But then why are they even growing the fucking grapes in the first place????? Is the Picard family just doing it for the shits and giggles???

Umm, yes? It's what I described, people work because they decided it is worth their effort.

I bet your own business is not just for money's sake.

Hmmmm....IDK I'm gonna have to think about that a little more. People working because they decide it is worth the effort even though they don't have to is kind of circling back to where we started at on Friday.

I would absolutely have a vineyard as a hobby if all my other needs were met and I had the startrek tech to help me!
You and me both bro. Hell I'd even use that free time to fly out to Wales for a week or two and hang out with you at the Chateau WelshBloke.

I literally risk my life and health doing excruciating work. In theory, the little bit of money I make goes to paying for my toys, but I've ended up giving a lot of that away because someone else needed it more than I did, and I figured I was having fun anyway.

I'm way underpaid in my real job, but I'd probably still do it even if I didn't need money. I can point to all my monuments made of concrete and steel, and actually say I did something to Make America Great®, and prove it.

I would like to develop mixed reality robot fighting system, but I got to make money to feed the family. See what happens when money is no longer needed? People are free to pursuit their passion.

Think of all the open source projects. Or Habitat for Humanity.

There is also this

Wow I didn't even think of this but your fighting robots stirred it in my brain. What if it goes sideways? What if a group of people who are free to pursue their own passions with almost unlimited energy decide to build fighting robots to harm people who do not agree with them? They could replicate them by the millions.

Dang sdifox you got me really thinking about the downsides of all this.

But what are they fighting about? You're not thinking in a post-scarcity mindset.

And you think I am the pessimist.

But I want to sit outside in Italy, overlooking a lake while I drink my wine! I don't want to grow it in an attic!
Then go for it. As a computer geek I am more interested in fully automating nutrient and environmental control for plants. Say we quantify ideal soil, water, temperature, light for each stage of a particular grape, then you can have ideal crops every season. And you can grow ten different varieties with one row since you only need 2kg of grapes per litre of wine. Youn can have all sorts of fun experiments.
For bonus points you grow some other crops with varying flowering cycle and have apiculture in the same space.

Oh it would absolutely be somewhere in Italy!
I like it! The Vigneto il WelshBloke it even sounds good!. Definitely in the Montalcino region if you're a red guy but perhaps the San Gimignano region if you prefer whites. I don't care which one you pick but I want to meet you there!

Yeah but if you are going to use that much tech you might as well replicate the grapes!
It's not about the grapes, it's about experimentation in the growing of the grapes. You could just replicate your favourite wine if you are just looking for a drink.
