I am ready to buy a new CPU?mobo combo right now. I am considering the ASUS A7N8X and Athlon 2800+ as my first choice. If you could buy any CPU/Mobo what would it be. Would you get a 533fsb Intel mobo (which one?) or stick with Athlon based chipsets? If Athlon, which MOBO? (Nforce2 or KT400?) Would you wait for KT400A or just go with whats out now? I am ready to buy something within a week so suggestions are appreciated.

If there was no budget I would get either the Asus or the Gigabyte Granite Bay boards with a 3.06ghz CPU.

Otherwise i would be happy with a XP2400+ and a Asus A7N8X.

GA-8INXP/3.06- Intel
8RDA+/2800+ AMD

Why did some of you say if money was no object, you'd get a 3.06 in a Intel but not a 2800+ for AMD? :D

No budget?
Torn between a nForce2 & xp2800+ ; or Granite Bay & 3.06P4. Probably the intel, but cpu sans hyperthreading to allow quiet.
Since my KT266a w/ 2400+ doing me great just now, I't really wouldnt be a problem to wait and see about KT400a; if otherwise without a decent system I probably wouldn't want to wait. With budget more an issue, I'd be leaning towards the AMD, especially if without soundcard etc etc.

edit: ...and i'd definately get myself a new keyboard :/

I'd go with a Tyan Thunder GC-HE (S4520) and 4 2.8Ghz Intel Xeon CPUS with the Max ram it can hold (24GB) and a few Seagate Cheeta 15k RPM Ultra160 drives to go with the dual Ultra160 controllers onboard. Then maybe add an Adaptec Ultra360 SCSI Hardware RAID controller and a few more Cheetas

Most bang for the buck is the nForce2 chipset and Athalon.

I preferred the ASUS A7N8X deluxe, but Epox and Abit looked sweet too.

Rule of thumb is you have to double the processing speed to notice an appreciable difference.
Always get retail, not white box (OEM) for the warranty (s/b 3 year vs 1 year) and the fan.
Fan is OK unless you want to overclock.

XP OEM $Price XP Retail $Price
1700 57 1700 67
1800 59 1800 78
2000 87 1900 89
2100 95 2000 91
2200 155 2100 103
2400 175 2200 166
2600 280 2400 196
2700 319 2600 300
2800 382

I think sweet spot is 2100 but I can understand wanting to go as high as 2400
(prices are from newegg.com, although some are admittedly sold out.

ASUS P4T533 (not C) with two 512 MB sticks of 1066 32 bit RAMBUS with a 3.06GHz HT cpu and Ultra 320 SCSI. I just put one of these together and it will smoke anything in this thread at default clock speeds. :D
