We are in the final stages of wedding planning and are paying for the entire thing ourselves. It will be $10k total which I'm pretty proud of given the fact that other friends who are getting married are blowing $50-100k on their weddings and we did ours on a shoestring budget.
I've been asking different people what they wish they could change or do differently if they could do their wedding day all over again. One coworker said she wishes she'd spent more on a quality photographer and other one said he wishes he hadn't wasted money on a videographer.
What would you have done differently if anything? What are you happiest that you spent money on and what do you wish you hadn't spent any money on at all?
My parents spent less than $100 on their wedding.
😉 (e-penis++)
My mom, quite handy with needlework, made her own dress, and her mom provided a bouquet of flowers; my dad brought some kind of suit/coat thing of his own. Some family and friends were invited; food was potluck. Just a nice little wedding ceremony, with a Justice of the Peace presiding.
🙂
Super-expensive weddings like those $50k-$100k things you mention are amusing to me. Yes, the more money you throw at it, the more likely it is to last.
Damn, for $100k, it had better last for at least 4.7 lifetimes.
That's impressive, when did they get married and how many people were there?
I don't get super expensive weddings either. I saw a $1,000,000 wedding on some wedding show and the couple fought constantly and looked so miserable. Money really can't buy happiness but it can buy a $10,000 cake and $100,000 worth of flowers.
My friends are going to be the photographers, my aunt is making the flowers, my fiance's father is giving us the venue for free (he works at a school so it will be at the school), a friend is making the 3-tier buttercream cake for free, the groom-to-be is getting a free tux from Men's Warehouse, I got my dress off ebay so we are paying for so far:
- Food/catering (the most expensive, 1/2 the budget)
- Bridesmaid dresses on sale for $20 each from target
- Invitations and rsvp cards from vistaprint for $95 total including envelopes
- Church/officiant ($500)
- Dance floor rental ($400)
- Marriage license ($80)
- Day-of wedding coordinator ($300)
- Band ($500, we are paying for our friends to play and flying them out)
- Photographers ($500, they are friends and we bought their plane tickets out)
- Videographer ($750 for 5 hours, bargained down $1000)
- Flowers/centerpieces (aunt arranging them so we are buying them from a market, $600)
- Wedding website ($10, domain name via namecheap and free site design and mywedding.com)
- Wedding programs and placecards (TBD)
