If you could control casting for Top Gear America

Who would you have for the show?

The other thread got me wondering who AT Garage would pick to host Top Gear America. Post your suggestions and why you picked them.

My own lineup:

Tim Allen: Come on, who else in America do we have who can be Jeremy Clarkson without actually trying to mimic Jeremy Clarkson? Tim Allen is someone you can see driving around a track screaming, "POWERRR!!!!" without getting the nagging feeling that he's just a low-rent Clarkson imitator. Plus can you imagine some of the stuff he'd come up with for the challenges?

Peter Egan: Yes, I know, he's not a TV personality. But anyone who is familiar with his columns knows that Egan is both a fantastic car nut and someone who knows his stuff. Egan would fill the James May role well given Egan's love of old cars and his tendency to take a slightly more methodical approach than, say, Tim Allen. Again, this preserves the BBC Top Gear dynamic without being an obvious imitation of the BBC personalities. Not only that, but Egan's a decent race driver too.

Marisa Miller: Yes, there's some degree of pandering here. However, Miller is genuinely interested in automobiles and motorcycles and rides dirtbikes as well as street bikes. She'd be an excellent counter to Egan and Allen, who are both a bit older, and I think she'd manage the sort of "two faced" role that Hammond has (teaming with either Clarkson or May to annoy the other depending on which seems more fun at the time) quite well.

What say the rest of you?

Tim Allen is a good one. I'm hesitant to go with Jay, but his love of cars is almost unmatched by anyone. Adam Corolla was a good choice (if anyone listens to his podcast, you'll know why). Marisa would certainly get people watching.

edit: I was a car gathering/show/meetup on saturday and some guy was there with a v8 he'd stuck in a riding lawnmower. I told him to get some fake plates with "Tim Allen," "Tool Time," "Binford 6100" or something to that degree on it.

Tim Allen is a great choice. I thought someone like Tommy Kendall would be good too. He's young, a talented racing driver in his own right, and he's a pretty good TV personality too.

Trouble is, Tim Allen would probably demand a pretty hefty pay check to do something like this.

it wouldn't work. Too much white guilt in America means that half the jokes the three Brits say couldn't fly past the self righteous idiots who dictate what gets on TV in America.

These assholes want to emasculate everyone, leftist pansies.

Danica Patrick - because...well...BAM!
Tim Allen - Never thought about him but yeah, he'd work well
The Asian Guy From Mythbusters(Grant I think?) - He'd be the James May of the group. Instead of Captain Slow jokes they'd be making crazy AZN driver jokes.

Grant is a fantastic idea, especially for the challenges.

Maybe they could get Danica for the US Stig...

Well, Adam called Jamie the Stig on one of the driver episodes. They've also acknowledged that they're huge Top Gear fans, so that would be pretty awesome.

As much as the idea of a hot girl on the show would be nice (and Marissa Miller is about as hot as they get)…I actually think the "guy friend chemistry formula" of the UK Top Gear is a lot of what makes it fun. It's the reason we as guys enjoy our guys nights (be it playing billards at the bar or working on a car in a garage around a few beers). Guys just act differently when girls are not present and tend to cut up more. I'm sure there are exceptions…but I think the girls should more be special guests…like Sabine on Top Gear UK.

As for who I'd pick for hosts…hmmmm….

Eric Bana - Plays the more straight-laced guy…but can still be humerous at times (he never plays this in movies…but he's actually pretty funny when interviewed). He'd be closest to Hammond

Ezra Dyer - Writes for Automobile magazine and contributes for a number of other publications and seems to have a bit of nuttiness about him

OR

John Phillips - Writes for Car & Driver and is just…well…crazy

Either of these two guys seem like they are personable enough…a bit crazy…and could hold down the serious car angle.

Jerry Seinfeld - He loves Porsches and has a great sense of humor. He's a HORRIBLE actor, but a good presenter
