hmm i know there are a lot of addition factors but people that make $30k drive ~$15k cars which is half their annual income... i don't see whats wrong with someone making $150K spending 1/3 of 1 year's pay. i'd be all over it.

/me is a car nut though so...

Hell yeah I would. But not a new one... I would probably buy myself I 1969 Camaro SS/RS Black w/ white stripes, 427ci. and fully restore it. I know it will most definately run over the 50K mark but it would be worth it. I would probably restore it w/ some help from my dad.

What? There is a difference in being able to buy a car and being able to afford keeping it. I'm looking in the direction of insurance, repairs, et al.

Thats what I thought. I don't see why someone making $150,000 can't buy a $50,000 car. Heck, as WarSong said people that make very little income event drive better than $15,000 cars. And on top of that most people will have more than one car (usually 2) which itself will total the income of a low income family.

<-- Not a car nut.

I wouldn't buy a $50K car no matter how much I made. 15 years ago I was debating whether I should save money when I could have a nice big new expensive car. Now when I look at my bank statements, I'm really, really glad I bought the used Olds.

Most people would learn something from writing down how much their car(s) cost each year (payment, gas, insurance, repairs). For our two cars we average $6000/year. I have friends with two cars that are in the $10,000 range.

Nothing wrong with having a comfortable, reliable car, but I know quite a few people who choose cars based on whether they think other people will be impressed by it. I can tell because they are always referring to their car by its make - "It was really crowded at the mall yesterday - I had to park my Lexus all the way at the back of the lot."

i'd say it would depend on how much you drive. If you spent more than an hour a day oin the car, why not have a nice car. If you live in nyc and take the subway to work, why have a nice car? I spend about 2 hours a day in the car getting to/from work (not by choicee, it kinda sucks) But I wouldn't hesitate to drop 40k on a car if i was making 150k. 50k is starting to get up there, but if i liked something I would buy it.

I voted no, but I'd like to clarify...

I can easily afford a 50 grand plus car and have been very tempted by the S-class Mercedes, but choose not to. I've reached 35 years of age and have witnessed (and am supporting) relatives who did not secure their retirement in a way that they could continue a comfortable lifestyle after retiring. So I've become a bit more conservative with my spending and I'm saving a majority of my income now, and reinvesting a great deal of my profits back into my company.

New cars are some of the worst investments one can make. I'd rather my money make money, than throw it away at this stage of my life.

I guess I've gotten cheap in my middle age. :p

Now, I could, and very well might spend 50,000+ on a classic car as an investment. :) I've got a huge hard-on for a '57 or '58 fuelie Corvette. :D

Of course, i'll buy a BMW CSL or M3. What's wrong with spending that much money on a car if you're making 150k/year? How much money should you make per year to afford one of those car? $200k? I thought, as long as you can make the monthly payment and the insurance then you can afford it larrr ... is it not?

OH, i think owning a house is much much better than renting.

I would have to say no, I am a big car fan but I don't want to drive around some Benz. If I was single and made that kind of money I would probably get a BMW 3 series or a Lexus IS300. Those are cars I really like, some kind of sports sedan or coupe. :)
