you want someone classified as a "fiduciary." They're legal obliged to act in your best interests unlike most brokers who are only obliged to enrich themselves. Of course if they're not very bright just being a fiduciary won't make them good

From what my DIL (who is a CPA) has said, CPAs have an ethical code that doesn't allow them to discuss client information without the client's permission, but they do not have legal confidentiality privilege like a physician does. If brought in to testify, they will throw you under the bus.

So I would be very cautious about admitting that you have been embezzling from your employer and have not reported half your income to the IRS for the last 10 years. Just saying...

My friend's girlfriend's cousin's mother's father's friend's uncle's nephew said if I give them $1, it becomes a legally binding attorney-client privilege and they can't tell anyone anything no matter what I say.

I have been posting here for 12 years and never reported any of my ATOT posting commissions on my tax forms.

Just don't tell your CPA.

A certain bewhiskered white-haired fellow assured me that those payments were 100% tax free...and I'm a virgin...I've NEVER been lied to before.

You want a Tax Lawyer, not a CPA if your situation is that fucked up you are concerned about being hauled into federal court.

CPA's aint gonna break the law for you or file a return with falsified information. If you want nothing more than a consultation, sure, they will not report you to the IRS unless whatever it is you are doing is highly egregious, like pound u in the ass 20yrs in the Fed Pen. They will give you sound advice for your scenario and explain the ethical approach as to how it should be reported.

Am CPA, but dont do taxes...
