Actually, the real need is that there are shortages because all of the areas in the storm's path are no longer giving blood. The Red Cross needs to make up for the short fall and what they have to use in the relief effort. So, it is not just going to NO. It is to help make up for what is no longer coming out of the NO area too.

For what it's worth (I organize the bloodmobiles in our school)

Red Cross changed the guidelines for those who have been in European countries. I can't recall how it changed, but several who were declined before were not eligible.

Huge reason blood is in short supply this time of year: A very large proportion comes from high school bloodmobiles. Many schools are just now returning to school.

Curious though - why do you think they're going to need a lot of blood? What kinds of injuries are that widespread that require transfusions of plasma, red blood cells, or the whatchamacallits (forgot the third component)

One pint of O+ on the way

How about the kids that those same gang bangers raped and left maimed, or the old folks that were hurt and robbed after the hurrincane? I would like to help them, wouldn't you?

AB negative. Would give if I wasn't so goddamn scared of needles. I'm afraid of hanging a poster. Needlephobia sucks.

You know you can only conquer a fear by trying. I used to hate needles too, after having blood tests every day for a month and I can't go more than a month without a test I no longer fear them. Just try not to think about it (get your mind on something else) and don't look at the needle, if you tell them you are afraid of needles they will take that into consideration and try to make it easier for you.
